While taking my 258 out for a winter shakedown I noted problems with resistence with the side-mounted throttle control (Volvo Penta 3885624). While this would seem to be a cable problem, the cable was recently inspected and the outdrive serviced in October. I had the boat out several times since with no trouble.

However, I have had trouble with the Side-mounted controls.
Last summer the nut that holds the throttle handle to the housing came loose, and the throttle slipped.
It was at that time that I notice all three trim wires (red, green, blue) had been frayed, and had signs of being previously taped. These wires ride over the throttle handle and seem tight and very tenuous. Since I was miles from home a local marina helped me repair the throttle and retape the red wire (trim power) power which was frayed badly. All worked well until today.

Today I noted the following:
-significant resistence when first giving full throttle

-high RPM (2000 rpm)when the throttle was placed back in neutral that resolved when I turned the engine off and ran the throttle thru full several full back and forth motions.

-complete loss of the lower trim after the above (trim up works fine), trim down is dead.

Any suggestions for what the problem might be?
Suspect I may need a new wiring harness for the controls?
