Post subject: | Shallow Depth 6.5" Speakers For Radar Arch |
Is anyone aware of any 6.5" round speakers with a very shallow mounting depth? I want to move my rear 2 speakers from just above the bench/sink to higher up on the arch. The problem is the arch lacks the depth needed for the current speakers. In the below image, the current speaker is in bottom hole. There are a couple issues with this; one it doesn't project outside the boat well and two when someone is sitting in the bench the speaker is right at ear level. ![]() This is another image, the speaker on the port side is just above the sink. Overall there are 4 speakers in the cockpit, none of which are in good spots. All seem to be too low in the boat. ![]() Any help suggestions would be appreciated! |

I've been toying with this on the 318 as well. The arch on the 318 has 4 speakers in it -- 2 at the very top firing down, and 2 on the sides about 1/3 the way up on the arch. Depth is limited to just under 3 inches if my memory serves me. Literally, the easist fix will work for most everyone out there... Polk Audio shallow speakers... http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB651S/ ... w+speakers ![]() 2 inches deep. The cons: Better be ok with gray/silver grills. Crutchfield has a buy one pair, get another 1/2 off deal fairly often. Not on sale right now, but will be at some point. Your other option is to have some spacer rings made. You can use starboard or plexiglass. Thickness would vary based on the speakers you use. |

Thank you, do you happen to have the depth/width of the arch? I went down yesterday with speaker wire and all my tools ready to make the move and didn't even consider the depth issue. As soon as they wouldn't fit I replaced them and opened a beer ![]() I don't even think my arch is 2" deep/wide. The current speakers didn't even come close to fitting and they are apparently 2 7/8" Current speakers http://www.wirelesshut.com/0/9868287.html |

as was previously mentioned, use the spacer rings made from fiberglass or similar.... That way you are not limited to 2 or 3 speaker choices. Justin |

The spacer rings, and shallow depth speakers will allow you to mount in the arch, but the sound quality will suk. Maybe install a pod on the arch that faces fore and aft. They sound so much better, and are an easy install. ![]() |

If you have an arch that is high enough, then it will work. I have seen them on 320 Sundancers, and on my BIL's 530 Carver arch. They are not cheap. These guys did the install on my BIL's boat, they should be able to get you one if interested. The speakers are made by Focal, by hand in France. They also have spacers available. http://www.wavesandwheels.org/products.htm |

Thanks Cap'n nice idea, but I'm sure those would be a head banger on my 298. How do you figure the spacers would affect sound quality? It's not like my 6.5" speakers have huge magnets and put out a ton of bass. The only quality loss I can imagine is losing some of the bass affect from the enclosure size from the original mounting location. I have a 10" sub on the boat so bass is not an issue. |

Bass loss is what I was getting at. You could always put a bass blocker on them, and let the sub take all the lows. That way, you would not have any worries of overdriving them. Would the overhead pod be hit with your head when walking through the cockpit ? or when standing up at the helm? On many 30+ foot boats, the center of the arch is over the cockpit seats, or just behind the helm, not where anyone would bonk their head on it, unless they stood up on the seat. It's been awhile since I have been on a 298, so it may not work on yours. But, if you want the best sound, on the bow, and on the swimplatform, the Pod is the way to go. Might be worth measuring how low it would be, just to make sure. |

It would be a close call for anyone 6' or taller. The below picture shows a buddy who is my height, about 5'10" not sure there is more then 12-14" between his head and the arch. ![]() |

I will agree. It would be a close call with your set up. I know it would work if our 268 had an arch, as we have port side cabin access, and a triple wide helm seat and no port side lounger like you do, and it would not interfere. Spacers may just be the way to go for you. |

I ordered a set of spacers from Amazon for less then $10. I'm gonna paint them white and try them out this weekend. Pics will be included of course. |
