I am considering installing radar on my 268v (with radar arch) when I upgrade my GPS unit to a Garmin 4000 or 5000 series. Has anyone installed radar and have you found the investment to be worthwhile? We plan to make some extended cruises and we do get fog in Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound. Also, I would appreciate any suggestions on a brand of radar to install or comments on the Garmin 4000 or 5000 series with the HD radar units.

If you boat

a) in the dark
b) in the fog
c) in a busy waterway

Than, radar is a great addition!

Can't say much about the 4000 or 5000 Garmin's - but a friend of mine has one of those with the HD radar and it is way better and easier to use than my RayMarine setup with a C80.

Garmin is a good way to go if you are doing a fresh install.

Although, the new Raymarine equipment is supposed to be very nice as well.

Whatever you get, make sure you have built in GPS, get a good transducer, and a great chart card for your area! If you can get your VHF plugged in (if you have the DSC feature) - that's a great safety feature.

Thanks for the reply. The units I am looking at are pretty slick. They have GPS with an overlay of the radar. The main unit is touchscreen and a nice upgrade from my older gps only unit.
