I bought a new VHF to replace the original Icom that came with the boat in 1999, but I am trying to figure out how to remove it. I was hoping I would not have to remove the plastic/wood piece that goes around the steering wheel and around all of the switches. Is it possible to just pull the radio out? I gave it a decent tug just to see but it did not budge, but I didnt pull too hard in fear I would break something. Has anyone replaced their VHF before that can offer some advice?

Thanks

Is it a raymarine unit? Check the vendor website for install info. I've got a ray 215 vhf and there's some screws that go into the sides of the bracket, which is BEHIND the dashboard. Getting it out looks like a real pain in the butt.

If it's anything like the VHF that we took out and replaced, then yuo do need to remove the "wood" dash plate. Ours is a 268, we just took out the perimeter screws and slid it out slightly over the steering column. No need to take it off completely, just enough to remove the washer/nuts on the backside of the radio

Its an ICOM so it looks like we will have to remove the "wood" trim.
