 Post subject: Bilge pump replacement

Stopped by the boat this afternoon to check on the boat due to the planned 50mph winds and noticed the bilge was on. We had some heavy rain but not enough to keep the bilge on. Upon further review of the pump I noticed there was a leak coming from the side of the pump. I assume the casing is cracked so the pump was just pumping water back into the bilge. Luckily there isn't too much water in the bilge.
My question is this, obviously I am going to replace it with a new one but the current one is a pump with a separate switch. I was going to replace it with a pump with a built in switch. Is this the best way to go? Also, the current pump is 1250 gph so I will probably go with a 1500gph and found a brand called rule. Is this a decent brand? Any tips on replacement?

Rule is a good brand nothing wrong with that. I would bump up to the largest pump that can still use the current discharge hose. If you don't mind upgrading the discharge hose move to a 2000 or 2500. De-watering ability is like horse power, you can never have too much.

Thanks, I will double check the hose size and go with the biggest one that can accomodate the draw, which I think is most up to 2500 because the draw is only about 4-6 amps.

I bought the 2000gph. West marine did not have the 1500 like I wanted so the salesman gave me the 2000 for only about $15 more. Well worth it in my opinion.

On a related subject - I recently purchased a 98' 258, I noticed that water from the Front Bilge will back up into the cabin. I had to pull up the carpet, it was thoroughly saturated. Where is this water coming from, (before it enters the bilge)? and why? Is there anything that can be done about it?

Your front bilge catches any water that enters in front of the aft cabin. You may have the sink running into it also. Your head/shower floor drain should run to a separate box that will contain a filter screen and it's own pump and switch setup. This is the shower discharge and may also be linked to your sink.

I would check the front anchor locker and the portholes for leakage. The cabin doors could also be your source if you don't keep the boat covered well.

ran into a small problem with my bilge replacement that I am hoping someone can help me with. The bilge pump that was in the boat had 4 wires going into a harness...two brown wires that went to the float switch, and one brown/one black going to the pump. the new bilge pump has only three wires, one brown, one black, and one brown and white wire. I assumed that since my new pump has a built in switch I would probably just seal that fourth wire. does this seem right? I hooked up the two power wires, and when I hook up one wire it stays on, the other does nothing. I am extremely confused. any suggestions? the wiring diagram that came with the new pump was useless because it only shows options when wiring to a Rule switch and not the stock two way switch.

you should have 1 wire with 12v all the time and a wire with 12v switched power. seal off the other wire. It is important to have 1 wire with 12v battery power that is not switched so that if you are moored and have the breaker off, the float switch will still activate the pump.

thanks, after I cleared my head and read your email I went back down to the boat and was able to get it working. I had the wrong brown wire hooked up. I just seAled the fourth wire. Thanks for the help.
