Anyone had any success with antifouling the composite Volvo XDP I/O drives?

Cheers

you aren't supposed to anti foul drives. Anti Foul coating properly applied should stop 1" around the perimeter of the gimbal housing on the hull.

well you aren't supposed to use bottom paint on the drives and yes you are supposed to leave a gap around the drives. Here is the salt water you still need to anti foul the drives however you need to use either a product like Trilux 33 or Trilux Prop and Drive spray. Just make sure you don' paint over the anodes! lol

As the previous poster said you are supposed to anti foul drives and yes you do need to leave the gap, this is mainly due to the fact that most boat antifouling used Copper and that is why you should not use on an aluimium drive. The trilux etc has no copper in it so it's good for aluimium, but the XDP are a composite drive, which is why i asked the question. If you leave them with no antifoul in a heavy foul salt water they will get growth on.

Sj,

I did not catch the distinction between bottom paint and anti fouling paint. Sorry about that!

If you leave the XDP's bare and they get growth, is the growth as hard to remove as it is from traditional aluminum housings?

I have always had the boat dry stacked in Florida, but i'm in the process of moving the boat back to the UK than to Portigul. the marina in Portigul have said i should antifoul the drives, but as these XDP are not in Europe i don't know what to use. I know that after 3 weeks in Fort Lauderdale in the summer the drives had a large attachment of growth, espacially barnacles, and they where indeed have to get off.

You might want to check with Volvo as far as what they recommend...but I can tell you the antifouling paints currently in use are not so good...the tin based ones were better...and these are outlawed in the US however if they are legal in Europe that would be the way to go...the fouling is the real downfall of IO drives in salt water...every year I have hours of clean up even after painting with the newer paints for aluminum...they just don't work well here...

TBT's have been banned in Europe for nearly 20 years, we are well on the way now to banning copper based so god knows what we are doing to us then

Well unless they have something that works better...if you use Trilux and are leaving it in the Med...or similar...figure on hauling it about every 2-3 months to pressure wash and re-paint the drives...because that's what we would have to do here if you want no big cleanup at the end of the season....

That was what i'm planning on doing, that's why are shipping the boat from the US on a trailer so i can pull her out every month or so.
