Can you do it? I haven't tried since I got my impeller fixed fully, but I'm guessing you could as long as you started it up before you started running...

I have never seen anything published that said you couldnt. I have done it with mine and it didnt shut down do to high temp.

Thanks. I've only tried once, and barely any water was coming out the exhaust. It was before I had my impeller issue all figured out though.

it is considered a no-no.

In perfect conditions, you probably could - but there is a higher risk of sucking air, which would not be good.

Out of curiosity why would you want to? Why would you need that much power underway?

You really don't. It could help get the cabin cooler quicker on a really hot day, but thats about it.

I am sure the big yachts in FLA have them running all the time for AC and I would imagine they go 30 to 40 kts. Maybe the big boys are set up differently?

This is from the Westerbeke manual. I could not find anything that said you could or could not. This is the only referece found to running while underway.


▲ CAUTION: On some extremely high-speed boats,
the use of a sea scoop type strainer may be necessary to
provide an adequate supply of cooling to the generator
when the boat is underway. If this is necessary, the
exhaust piping from the generator must have a
continuous downward pitch to the outlet at the transom
so that no water can be trapped and back-up into the
engine. A solenoid operated shut-off valve can also be
installed in the raw water supply to the raw water pump
and wired to close when the generator is not in
operation

After reading this article, I don't think you have to worry about getting enough water to the generator.

I've heard both yes and no, we have a kohler and we've ran ours while up on plane a few times and have never had a problem. Never in really rough water. A couple of times during the winter we might take a long cruise and run some heat. Probably didn't really need it, but it's never been an issue. On the 328, the water intake for the generator is back far enough that it really shouldn't ever be out of the water. Even if you hit a big enough wave that the intake comes out of the water, it will only be for a second and the pump will resume pulling water the second the intake is back in the water. Whether we're on plane or not, you do not stand between the admiral and her coffee in the morning.

Waterskiers beware

Stuff like that is the reason I dont take up water skiing or snow skiing for that matter. Life is short, but Ill enjoy it sitting on the boat rather than being pulled behind it.

On our 298 we've run our generator while on plane without problems. We run the genny to keep the cabin cool and to allow the little one to watch a DVD on the TV, or even run the microwave.

Unless we go swimming, we leave the generator on all of the time.
