The wife said her birthday present this year could be a windlass (she's sick of being the anchor labor). Since I currently lack the idiot gene, I am going to take her up on that.

Maxwell ... Lewmar ... ? For a 248, which is the best / most reliable? I have a rocker switch at the helm already. Not sure if it's wired up or not.

I saw his post and sent him an email about it. I have not received a response yet. Perhaps he sold it.

Are you saying that the Lewmar is a better choice over the Maxwell?

The V700 would be my choice for a vertical Windlass. Your boat should be pre-wired for a windlass as all Vistas use a standard wiring harness for each model to accommodate all available options. There was a very good write-up from a former forum member on a 268 windlass installation. You can find it here:

I just finished putting a maxwell 800 on my 248. I did all of the wiring my self but had a fiberglass shop do the install of the actual windlass. I can take some pics of mine for you. I would suggest selecting either the maxwell 500 or the Lewmar V700 as all of the wiring that is predone can be used. I had to run new #4 AWG from the stern to the bow which took time and planning!

Good Luck

Bren,

Thanks for linking Craig to my F/S thread.

I am parting out all the "upgrades" I bought for the 248 and then the boat it's self MUST go this summer.

Brenden did an excellent write up on his install of the V700. I have no axe to grind in the brand wars, I think the Maxwell is a nice unit too, but it's twice the price (MSRP) for no apparent reason.
