We tried to run our generator this weekend and it would start and run for about 1-2 minutes and then shut off. It would start each time I tried but would not keep running. Anyone have any ideas about what it could be? Carberator, maybe? and if so, what to do?

First guesses...bad/old gas in the reservoir, impeller needs replacing, exhaust clog / overheating, or bad electrical component.

What brand/model is it? When is the last time you used it successfully? When did you last replace the impeller?

First step, get the generators specific manual and start troubleshooting the known issues listed. Each model for each brand has their known issues and replacement advisories. Otherwise hall it up to the boat shop and have then take a look. I would read up first and see where that gets you.

Make sure you have enough gas in your fuel tank. I know that I have a short tube that starts to starve the generator when the tank gets under about75%.

Could also be an overheat situation -- are you spitting water out the exhaust as you would expect?

Check the strainer for the raw water intake befor you do anything else. If it is cloged the geny will overheat and shuy down automatically.
