I have 1998 FW258 and the fuel gauge is malfunctioning. The fuel gauge will randomly drop from whatever the actual reading is to "empty", the low fuel warning light will illuminate, and then the low fuel beeper will begin to beep. I have run a new ground wire from the dash directly to the battery, a new sending wire from the unit to the gauge, and even replaced the sending unit without solving the problem. I resorted to stuffing a scrap of cloth into the back of the beeper so as to quiet the beeping sound.
Here is my question - has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, have been able to replace the offending fuel gauge? The dash is a 'sealed' unit - has anyone replaced their entire dash? If so, do you remember the approximate cost?
I am considering purchasing a new fuel gauge - does anyone have recommendations? Finally, I am considering purchasing a complete set of instruments and then making a new dash insert out of 1/4 inch teak plywood -- any thoughts on that approach.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Desert Steve
