I recently purchased a 2002 248 Vista. The boat has a switch for an anchor windlass and according the the Four Winns Dealer, all boats come prewired for all available accessories. Has anyone installed an aftermarket windlass to a Vista? If so, how would I go about doing it?

You won't find a better DIY than this. It was done by a friend on his 268 Vista. I know he won't mind if I link it.

Oh Holy Hades!!! I am mechanically inclined but by no means an expert. Although the whole thing makes sense. When it comes to fiberglass patching and repair, he lost me. I wonder what a a dealer would charge me to install? I am scared to find out, but I have to think that it's safer than me attempting it myself.

Just guessing, but it will probably be $1500 to $2000 for a dealer install with parts and labor.

I was never really sure why they pre wired the 248 , but did not offer it as an option. I thought about adding it ,but would rather put the money into an ac unit. I dont need the windlass that often. Not that hard to just pull and lift.

I added a windlass to my 268. After crawling all over the boat, I did not find an extra wiring harness (for main power) going to the anchor locker. I had to add a harness from the circuit breaker to the windlass. for main power. I did find wiring for the switch, so I was able to tie it in nicely.

It is not a bad job to do. Regarding the fiberglassing, I used a piece of starboard to cover the prior hole and the put the windlass through the starboard. It looks rather normal. I can probably email pics if necessary.

This is truly one of the "pay the dealer" projects.
