Post subject:  Microwawe and stove???
My microwave and stove work while I'm hooked up to the shore power but they don't work when I'm on the water?

Is there an other switch I overlooked other then the one in main breaker panel?

Time lights up when the shore power main is selected and immediately shuts off when I take shore power off.

They would both need to be dual voltage to work on DC power. They are not.

Only way they would work is with an inverter (will drain batteries quickly) or add a generator.

As others have indicated, most cooktops and microwave ovens only work on AC power. They need a considerable amount of power to operate. So in order to have them working you've got to have AC power. Either from a shore connection or from a generator. If you have a generator on board then you'd, of course, need to have it running and the breakers for it flipped to them (from shore power).

If you don't have a generator then you're not going to be running a cooktop or microwave when away from shore power. It's impractical to try to add enough batteries to support them. The added weight and space needed for them would be impractical. Especially since a generator would weigh less, fit better and offer a LOT more power.

He has a 97 258 now. You could probably fit a 3 KW Westerbeke but you are looking at nearly $9,000 US with installation.

I decided to go with a portable gen set (Honda EU2000i) because I can use it with 5th wheel RV when camping in mountains, and when beach camping I can remove gen set and place far away from boat and not have noise/vibration while sleeping to run air conditioner on those 100 plus deg days!

You can buy these little Hondas for under $900, handy little things.

Do a search here on this web site, lost of info about built in and portable gen sets, then you can decide what is best for your situation.

If you are looking for a way to green your kitchen, you may want to think about the way that you cook. Cooking isn't a huge strain on your electric bill, but every little bit helps. Stoves have been around for ages. They are a stout, reliable friend. Their cooking methods are favored by gourmands. Microwaves, however, are easy to use and fast.

I know that "Green" is the latest Buzz word. But come on, there is nothing green about a boat or using any of its features!!!!! We use huge amount of fossil fuel, if you use a gen set to create A/C 110 power for running the HVAC system, what's a little microwave use........

I do agree that I prefer to cook out of the cabin on our Magma Kettle, but this is not "green" either. It burning propane and there are emissions involved with using it.

Really, just don't use the "green" buzz word when talking motor boats, as we are the furthest from true green.
