Put my boat in for the first time. I had her winterized in the fall last year and summerized this spring by my local Marina. Took the boat off of the trailer and she stalled. She ran fine until I got to the speed zone and she stalled out at 3000 rpm's. She would run rough and backfire. I then pulled the fuel filter and everything appeard to be ok. I did see a wire hanging loose on the top left side of the motor. I re- attached it, however she continued to die out at 3000.

The guy who works on my boat is a professional Boat Racer and has a great reputation. I am going to take it back to him but I wondered if any of you have had the same problem.

Weekend Blown.

Thank You in Advance.

Never heard or experienced that issue. So you did change fuel filter? My first thought is bad fuel, water, dirt, plugged filter and is starving motor at the higher RPMs.

I agree - sounds like no fuel at higher RPM.... wonder if the fuel pump is dying??

I have done some research on this site. I think it is the fuel pump. We heard some whining sound coming from the engine compartment. I thought it was the blower motor at first but was not that. I will take her in this week to have it repaired.

If it is the fuel pump, and its a pulse style, get rid of that and convert to a an impeller style.

I went through those issues with our last FW boat!! $300 bucks a pop!!

When our fuel pumps went out, they just went, no noise, just dead.

Took the boat in today. He put two mechanics on it as soon as I pulled in. They said it was either a fuel pump regulator or a fuel pump. I am praying it's not the fuel pump. The cost is $625 just for the pump. I got a feeling I'm going to take it in the shorts on this one.

Sounds like it's going to be a new fuel pump. Could the winterizing techniques that they used ruin my fuel pump? The boat ran perfectly until I had them winterize it.

Needs new fuel pump. God it is expensive. This will cost nearly $800.00 with install.

Its doubtful they did anything to cause the pumps failure. The only thing would be if the fuel in the tank wasnt treat and somehow clogged the pump (happened to me), but proving it was there fault would be really tough.

Look at it this way, it is costing you a lot now, but its one less thing you'll have to worry about later. It could be a lot worse, last week a guy dropped his boat on the concrete boat launch--his weekend, maybe summer, was over!

Good luck to ya.

I got to agree with last post, winterizing fuel consists of pouring in a few oz. of fuel stabilizer. Filter got plugged up and starved fuel pump??? Pump just gave up the ghost???? ran fuel tank too low and sucked up all the crap on the bottom of tank????

Well, enjoy the rest of your summer.

The tank was full. The boat only has 110 hours on it. Anyway I agree with the fix. I am going to be doing some boating on Lake Erie this year. The last thing I would want is to have to be towed in or stuck in a storm. My Friend say's " If it Floats, Fly's or Screws you should rent it". I am beginning to think he's right!!

Buy the unlimited towing from BoatUs for $34 plus cost of membership if you are not a member, it is well worth it.

Ditto on the towing insurance...I also have it through Boat US....
I have heard of a lot of failures of the electric fuel pumps on Volvo engines and they person who runs the boatyard where I get my bottom paint done was working on a Merc boat last summer same thing...500 bucks for a pump...my old carbed (4bbl Quadrajet) OMC is still running on the original mechanical pump...22 years old.....
Funny thing in 20 years of having fuel injected cars I only had to replace one electric fuel pump so far...

Glad you got your boat running properly. Strange the pump expired on a 2003 with so few hours on the engine. But, stuff happens. Never did have any issues with our fuel pumps on our 268, and it still amazes me the cost of those pumps. There is really not much to them.
But it's for a boat, so it's not too surprising.

Have a great summer of boating !

my apologies for hijacking this thread, but BoatUS is new to my marina this year. Are there any negatives I should know about? My buddy told me they charged 150/hr to tow if you're not a member?
