Hope everyone is having a great weekend on the water. I've got an issue with the galley sink. I thought i had it fixed last year but not so. My problem is every time we run water through the galley sink, it drains directly into the drain pan for the AC unit under seat in the mid cabin. It over flows and gets the carpet wet. I think there is a clog somewhere. Is the galley sink supposed to drain into the AC pan, i followed the hose from the sink and it appears that's where it leads. Can you use draino on this or would that be too harsh. I may try a snake today and see what happens.

that does not sound correct at all, maybe the galley hose routes near the A/C and then both may route to a sump pump to direct overboard or to gray water tank.

Find out if galley was ever plumbed to dump directly overboard, this would be best, no sump pump to deal with. Then again maybe the galley is below the water line.....

Michael, your galley sink should drain directly into your shower sump, thats under your first step in the cabin. Theres a thumb screw that holds the step in place, remove it and check your shower sump, I will bet its cloged or the pump or float switch is inoperative. I ran my sink drain overboard to a new thru-hull about 5 years ago and works great. I bet your water is backing up from the shower sump into you a/c pan. good luck, Joe. Let me know what happens, Joe.

Joe,
I found the sump this morning and cleaned the filter, yeah there is a T where the AC line and galley sink intersect then one line leads to the sump. Im thinking there might be a clog in that line, that's what is causing the back up into the AC unit. I am going to pull that line out and check it the next time i have a chance. Thanks!

Shower sumps are a pain in the ass. You quickly learn to be mindful of how much and what you let go down the galley sink drain. Some folks have changed their setup to drain the galley sink directly overboard instead of into the sump. The downside being any jewelry dropped down the drain would be immediately lost, versus being fished out of the sump. The upside being no foodstuffs going into the sump and contributing to some absolutely vile mold and gunk that forms in it. The one thing to really watch out for is too much water and soap converging in the sump all at once. Like someone doing the dishes while someone else is in the shower, and the AC is running. The soap tends to foam up inside the sump and the pump isn't quite able to keep the level down, so the water tends to bubble up through the lid or pump wiring hole and then overflows. Again, you learn not to let this happen. Yet another way things have to be done a little differently when on a boat...

Hi Michael

Just read your thread question. I would make certain to fix ASAP from all the hull rebuilding work I ended up doing on my 2004 328 - the mechanics and fibreglass guys pointed directly at fresh water build up in the Aircond pan. This was determined to be a contibution from over flowing sump pump (but that only ever happened once/twice I can remember) and the actual aircond condensation drain over filling the pan.

The end result of the damage this did to my boat (search threads for "Poor hull contruction" and you will see the thread beginning about this time last year (if you have forgotten)) -

The entire transom was replaced, the two main stringers were replaced right back through to the kitchen ! The firewall was replaced and as they had both motors, the genset and everything else inbetween out of the boat they also fixed some very dodgy factory glass under the floors and even under the front berth !

The boat ended up being out of the water on hardstand for 5 months and the cost was well over $55,000 .

It is now a far better and massively stronger (all the average quality ply was replaced with top quality far denser marine grade ply) boat than it was - you can actually feel it in rough seas.

So again I would get on to it ASAP as there were no signs at all of the damage slowly destroying the boat until a small leak started. Interestingly on this weekend exactly a year ago !

Cheers
Brett

Ours drained overboard on our 2000 268 also. So does our Monterey. IMO, that is the correct way to do it. Draining into the sump is unnecessary. The jewelry comment is just non-sense. Put the drain plug in the bottom of the sink, and nothing the size of a ring would ever make it past that.

Non-sense? Diamond earrings will fit down the galley sink drain.

Now there is an argument for leaving such items at home ...

Mine drains overboard. I like it better that way, although it is illegal in Texas.

Mine goes into the sump . . . which I prefer because the galley sink is used more so than the shower and thus fresh water is cycled through the sump more frequently. Otherwise I can see that sump getting funky quick because it always has some water in it.
