Post subject:  Prop size?

Can anyone tell me what is the proper or best size of prop to use? I am a new boat owner and own a 1994 258 Vista with the 7.4 King Cobra. It seems a bit slugish out the gate and I was told to keep it between 2500 to 3000 RPMs when cruising. She's used mainly to cruise and some tubing.

Any help? I believe it has a 15 on it now and I don't actually know what that means or refers to.

Thanks for the help.

If you really have a 15 pitch prop, you could try to find a 13. I would bet that 13 pitch are going to be hard to find, so that means you need to have the drive re-geared.

What elevation are you boating at? What gearing does drive currently have?
Our '95 245 sundowner with 7.4L king cobra, I had a 17 and 19 pitch props that I used, drive was geared 1:1.95 (high alt gearing) We boated anywhere from 4000' to 7000'

I have no idea what the gearing is but the boat is only and always used at Lake Powell. I have two other props in the boat and I know one of them had a 17 on it and am not sure what the other was. It doesn't look like it is very hard to change out the props.?
