I am planning a trip to Puget Sound and am concerned about putting my trailer in salt water. I have used sling launches on previous trips but there are limited sites that provide that service and the cost is a factor. What do others do to minimize the adverse effects of salt water on their trailer?

Thanks,

Firstly, I assume you have just a painted trailer Steve... I am almost exclusively salt water so have the galvanised and gatorhyded trailer which still looks perfect after 4 years.

The problem with salt water and a painted trailer is on the inside of the rails - it's the bit you can't see and the bit that is not painted or protected at all. Regular steel trailers almost always rot from the inside out, so by the time you spot it, it's usually too late...

Cleaning the outside is easy, and would recommend you use somthing like neutra salt or salt-away when you hose it down. Using either of these, I would then rinse as best I could inside the rails - there are holes or slots at various places on the bottoms of the rails for wires, hoses, drains etc. to run through. Squirt plenty of fresh water and salt away in these holes, steering the water jet to get all sides inside the rail (top, bottom and sides).

Not a perfect solution, but probably OK if you only plan to go into salt water now and again. Would be a pain to have to do all the time.

hello- I put mine in the saltwater and have a painted trailer. I use duct tape and tape up the midddle and back holes and then use salt way and file up the inside of the trailer. After that I pull the tape and spray inside all around each hole. Not the perfect solution but it works and should get most of it. You could also dip it in a freshwater lake afterward if you have access. I put in at Redondo which has a spray area that I rinse my trailer right after the launch and spray inside each hole. Hope this helps.
