Post subject: | Caulk |
I've got to redo the caulking in my head. I had a few small spots I fixed when we bought the boat, and one of those didn't seal completely somehow. I'm going to remove it all and redo it. Whats the best stuff to use on it? Also...the caulk around my transom storage locker/aft assembly above the swim platform is filthy. It might be easier to remove and replace it than try and clean it. What should I use on that? |

I forget the actual name of the caulk I used on my last boat that had this issue but I have always found that a caulk for below the waterline is the strongest (but most expensive) and holds very well. It takes some getting used to because its very tacky but you can usually find some caulking tools that make a very smooth and crisp caulk line. To get my caulk around the transom door clean I have found that Comet makes a bleach cleanser (non abrasive), its an industrial cleaner but is probably nothing more then diluted bleach. If I spray it down and let is sit in the sun for a few moments and scrup with a vinyl brush it comes out very clean. I have also used Roll Off before and it works very well. I use the comet cleaner on all of my floor and swim platform every spring and it brightens it up very well. |

It doesn't need to be strong...just keep rain water out. Old caulk is fine, just dingy. Where did you get the industrial comet? |

I am able to get it at work, but here is a link to it from nextag: http://www.nextag.com/comet-cleaner-wit ... tores-html I see they also make a comet mildew spray gel which keeps the cleaner in place and not running everywhere which may be nice for the caulk, I saw that on their website |

Thanks for the help! Just as a follow up...I used GE Silicone II Bath caulk in the head and it came out great. I put a little Barkeeper's friend on a wet toothbrush and scrubed the caulk at the transom. Sure brightened it up real quick. |
