 Post subject: Air Conditioning Problem

So this weekend I turn the air on like always, set it to 70 and a couple hours later it is showing 80 for the internal temp even though it was much colder than that in the cabin. Watched it for a while and the internal temp (indication) was not dropping and the compressor stayed engauged (obviously trying to bring it to the set temp of 70). I shut it off and noticed then that the internal temp started dropping, turned it back on and the internal temp went back up to 80-81. Next with the AC running I tool the access cover off the unit, as soon as I did the temp started dropping. In not much time it went down to the set temp and the compressor shut off like it should. Put the cover back on and the temp started right back up again.

Then I noticed the cold air return filter was REALLY dirty, as soon as I removed the filter the temp started back down again...so I figured I had it solved. Took the filter (just a wire mesh) and washed it with the hose nice and clean, renistalled and the temp still started to climb again.

Anyone ever heard of this and have any idea's. Why would venting the compartment the AC unit sits in effect this?
I ended up leaving the filter out for the weekend and had no problems

Funny I noticed a similar issue with my AC recently. It always felt colder than the indicator said. I found that the filters in the cold air return and on the AC itself were really dusty. I calened them and things seem to improve.

My guess is airleaks between the AC compartment and the outside. When the filter gets dirty, the AC compartment builds a slight vacuum and air comes from the easiest path. On my boat, I think that end up being behind the port lounge, outside the cabin. Or it may be leaking from a hotter area inside, it could be coming from the top of the compartment down through the hot electronics and then into the AC.

So now I keep the filters clean.

Well I cleaned the cold air filter, where is the filter on the AC itself that you mentioned?

Did you clean out your strainer? What is the waterflow from the pump? towards the end of last year we seemed not to be cooling well and after cleaning the strainer, it worked much better.

Also, how warm is the water you are in? Our river is now in the mid to upper 80's and it seems that the system is working harder than earilier in the season.

yes the strainer is clean........our water temp is 82 which is much warming than it usually ever gets in past summers.
But where is the correlation between warm water and the cabin temp indication with the compartment open?

Is the AC in the same place in v318? Can you see the cooling fin side of your AC unit? Mine has a filter stuck in a slot actually touching the cooling fins. The air goes through filter then the fins to the fan. Given my vacuum theory, I don't think this is your problem, but while you're cleaning air filters might as well get them all.

You should also see the thermistor clipped to the AC unit near the incoming air. This is the sensor for air temp. I've read you can sometimes get better performance by moving this into the cabin.
