Post subject: | Rough sounding drives |
Hello everyone, We got on the boat today and the engines sound fine sitting still but running they sound really rough. We came back to the marina and opened the hatch. Ran the engines and they sound fine. Seems like there is something wrong with the stern drives or props but I can't figure out what. We trimmed up to make sure there was nothing wrapped around the prop but didn't see anything. That was unlikely since it just came out of dry storage. Any ideas? |

Were the gimble bearings and ujoints inspected/lubed? How about he drive oil level, any obvious leaks? If an I/O gets a water leak in the bellows and it sits over the winter season these parts can rust and will cause noise when the engine is running. The input shaft turns whenever the engine is running. This is why it's a good idea to remove the drives at the end of each season to check the bellows for water (tear in the bellows) or gear oil (leaking input shaft seal). Plus it's the only way to grease the input shaft splines and ujoints if they are the greasable style. I'm assuming this is a salt water boat so this is even more important since salt water corrodes things a lot faster...I do mine each season...the drive comes off, everything is inspected and greased and the drive gets stored till spring. Then I reinstall the drive in the spring.... |

Just a guess but sometimes if I run with the drive way up I get unusual vibrations. Of course this is just at idle. I believe this to be normal though. |

Unfortunately I live in a shallow area and I need the drive to be almost fully up till I'm out of my channel. If I lived in deeper H2O I would definitely not do this. |

Your u joints may be shot |

X2, the force on the Ujoints form running the boat, even at low no-wake speeds can wear them pretty quickly, I would have a mechanic take a look at them, dont tell him your suspicions, just tell him you would like to see how they look. |
