Hi, just got a horizon 190 1998 and it wouldn't start after getting some water from a storm in the boat. knocked the starter and it worked for the trip. ( blew a hub on the way home and had to get it towed). We just got it from the shop from fixing that and now it won't start. it keeps blowing the fuse when we try to turn the key. Bought a new starter and have put it in about 6 times. with shims and without and it blew the fuse a few times and it would start a few times with a pinging noise. Any suggestions from anyone here? any help would be appreciated. thanks

First, I would get a wrench on the crank and turn the engine by hand to make sure it is free. Hopefully just the started bound some how, but could be the engine siezed up if it doesn't turn at all. Wouldn't hurt to pull the plugs too before you do that, and trying it with the starter too. Reduces compression, or chance of hydraulic lock from possibly water in one or more of your cylinders.

The things that can lock up an engine are as noted hydrolocking (water in cyls) and if the drive ran low on oil, it could lock up and prevent the engine from turning. I'd try cranking it with the spark plugs out (ground the coil lead) and see if water comes out of the spark plug holes. If it's still locked up, you can remove the outdrive and then try to crank it to see if it was the drive, but don't start it because the engine won't get cooling water unless you rig up a hose to the thermo housing inlet....

I don't think a locked engine is his problem. He did state that it started. Sounds to me like a timing issue. Just a thought.

Did you check to see if the engine is hydrolocking (water in cylinders)? Try cranking it with the spark plugs out. If water comes out the plug holes that's your problem. The other possiblity is that the starter is binding or the flywheel is damaged...did the old starter come with shims? Some need to be shimmed. My old one did not have shims so when I replaced it I did not use the one that came with the starter and it's worked well for the 3 years it's been on..

if your fuse keeps on blowing something is causing the starter to draw too much current...also check the batt cables and engine grounds...make sure they are clean and not rusted...
