I have only had the pleasure of filling my gas tank twice since I bought my 2000 Vista 268 and both times, regardless of filling very slowly, the fuel shot back up the fill hose and ran a couple cups down the side of the boat. It seems as though the vent for the tank, which is located inside the fill hose, does not function properly, in order to keep the last bit of fuel from boiling out of the boat. I really don't like spilling fuel, and certainly don't want a ticket from the Coast Guard for spilling fuel into the water. Now I stand with my ear close to the spill hole and a gas rag handy running the pump super slow, but it seems like I may have a blockage in my vent? Has anyone else run into this or have any ideas?

Just about any boat will burp back when it gets close to full. I take and wrap the nozzle with paper towels so it makes a seal, this catches the burp.

I had this problem on my first boat. The vent line had a long run inside the boat and few low spots that would fill with fuel, blocking the vent.

I have the same issue. I take a rag and wrap it around the nozzle. I have replaced / cleared the vent line. No difference.

Any of you guys ever have the fuel dock call the Coast Guard because of a couple cub spill? First time filling up, ended up spilling about a cup or so of gas into the water because of the blow back and the dock guy immediatly got my CF number and called the Coast Guard to report a spill. I am told that they typically issue a warning on the first "spill" but that if they see your CF number all the time they will send you a ticket. I am going to have to stock up on fuel absorbant towells it looks like...

Just buy one of these if you cant get the proper venting.

My vent is inside the actual fill hose opening though. I need like a plastic catch bib around the whole gas inlet. Whole thing seems like a goofy set up to me....

Weird. I had a 2000 268 Vista and it had an external vent for the gas. Before it ever reaches the deck fill
it would come out the thru hull vent, thus you know when it's 99% full.
I guess this is what you need then.....

Here in Texas, my experience has been that unless you're being stupid about it, the dock hands / store owner will not call you in. They understand that, especially for first time / new owners, there is going to be some spillage.

In fact, even being stupid goes unreported at times. My slip neighbor kicked his bucket of 10 year old gear oil (yes, 10 years old. smelled great) into the lake by accident and fled the scene. I spent 3 hours cleaning it up with the marina manager. It looked great sliming its way up the side of my boat. He got off with a warning.

Crazy.

At the rate that boats use fuel why do you have to fill up so much. The extra couple of gallons will only take you a mile or two  When your fingers start to go numb from gripping the fuel lever it's time to stop anyways!

My wallet tells me to stop before my fingers on the fuel fill do :D

I was a little surprised that they called the coast guard on my first fill up, but I am assuming they will see that and just issue a warning.

It will be hard to convince my girlfriend this boat was a good idea if I have to ask her to help paddle the boat around because the coast guard wont allow me to buy gas.
