As many of you know I am selling my boat and one question I was asked was what the maximum capacity of the boat (amount of people) that can fit on my 298. I looked through the owners manual and do not see it anywhere. He is telling me skipper buds was showing him a 26ft boat and told him 9 was the maximum capacity, which seems high for a 26 footer. Any idea where I can get that info?

My 26 foot boat is "Yacht certified" meaning there is no real capacity limit. As long as I have a vest for every person and people aren't hanging off the side of the boat I should be safe.

A simple formula used to calculate capacity is length of vessel x width of vessel divided by 15. For my boat that is 14.733. More than I would want to take any way.

There may be a plate on the boat that says yacht certified or you could use the formula and get 16.433 people, assuming an 8.5 foot beam and 29 foot length. Which is way more people than you would want on your boat any way.

That being said I have seen a 28 foot Sea Ray with a 10 person capacity. I am sure this was calculated at the factory during development and is much more accurate.

My 248 is 10 people or 2350lbs, my old 22' Stingray bowrider was 10 people or 2080lbs.

Doesnt make a lot of sense sometimes..

If I remember correctly, the Coast Guard requires a capacity plate with maximum capacity of people and/or weight. Unless yacht certified which was already mentioned.

For reference, my 1997 245 Sundowner is rated 12 Persons or 1800 lbs. The next line says 2500 lbs, persons, gear.

Yep, 11. I think it is mentioned on one of those stickers or Capacity Plate by the helm.

A 99 model would definitely have a capacity plate or the Yacht Certification plate and always near the helm.

Coast Guard only requires a capacity plate on boats under 20', but most boats up to 35' have one anyway.

There is a yacht certification plate next to the helm. As I questioned the potential buyer more he is a first time boater so I explained to him the difference between "maximum capacity" and "safe capacity". I told him that the only way I would want the maximum capacity on my boat was if its docked, or if I am rescueing another boatload of people, and thats everyone in lifejackets and seated.

Thanks Cappy, I though that the capacity plate was required if it was not Yacht certified. Am I correct in thinking that 26' LOA and up has the ability to be Yacht certified, if the Mfg wants to do so?

Yes.

The NMMA certifies products in four categories: boats (up to 26 feet), yachts (26 feet and over), personal watercraft, and trailers.
Until 2005 certification was voluntary, but now ,NMMA members are required to be certified by the close of the 2007 model year.
