OK folks, here's what happened.

Coming home from a short cruise and we lost our steering. Dropped anchor and called for a tow. Fortunatly only about 2 miles from home.

Boat is on the lift and put away for the night.

Don't quite know what is up yet, but here are the facts.

The steering wheel just spins, no lock to lock, no resistance when turning the wheel. Checked the mechanical connections in the aft, all look fine.

My thoughts, if the cable snapped somewhere between the helm and the connections previously mentioned it seems I should still get a lock to lock. Could it be a failure in the steering gear, I think Teleflex refers to this as the rack.

Has anyone had this happen? Any thoughts? Vessel is a 2005 V268.

All steering was normal until the wheel just freed up and all control was lost. We were at idle speed when this happened which was a good thing. We were at 40mph earlier.

Steering problem resolved.

The cable broke inside the helm. Replaced cable and helm today, it seems odd that the cable broke like it did when it took no effort to steer this boat.

Teleflex part number SSC6216 for a 2005 V268.

How much was the new cable? Easy to install?

Fire:

Parts cost about $225 for helm and cable. Local marina supplied the parts. Took about 3 hours to complete. Don't know how similar our boats are, but only 1 year different they should be pretty close.

The tilt mechanism had to be removed in order to provide clearance to remove the dashboard and get to the helm and to remove the old cable.

We cut the aft end of the cable with a high speed die grinder with a cut-off wheel. Then inserted the new cable into ths sleeve and taped them together. With one person pulling from the front and one person feeding from the rear it was not hard. I did remove the ceiling panel in the mid berth just to watch nothing got hung up. We did get a slight bit of resistance from pulling through the bulkhead between the engine compartment and mid berth. Most likely from the expanda- foam used during construction.

Most impotantly!!!! I installed an access panel in the transom storage locker that we worked through. Pictures in a previous post. It would be a difficult job without this access point. I would imagine the whole seating area floor and rear seat would have to be removed just so you could lay across the engine to maybe see what you would be doing to disconnect and reconnect the cable.

If you can find the cable Teleflex has the part number printed on the cable. Directions for removing and installing the cable into the helm are printed on a tag hanging on the pin at the helm.
