Hello out there
Looking at a new owner of a 2003 348 Four Winns and was curious if anyone has a recommendation for what to replace for both the stereo and the VHF.
The factory equipment I want to replace and would like some recommendations

Thanks for you thoughts

Richard (Annapolis, Maryland)

Welcome, and conrgrats!

Many of us are very happy with upgrading to the Polk Audio db651 speakers to replace the existing cabin and cockpit speakers. I am a big fan of JL Audio subs and I have many friends that are happy with the latest Kenwood head units. As for your VHF...I have ZERO experience or input.

Thanks for the reply and thanks

Looking forward to using this Spring and Summer.

I see you listed Speakers and was wondering if you replace the stereo as well? If so what did you replace the stereo with?

Thanks
Richard

Our 318 has the Raymarine VHF because it goes along well with the other electronics.

Most any of the newer VHF units will have what you want on them -- DSC being a biggest feature.

I would consider staying with your choice of other electronics (Garmin or RayMarine). If you go out of band, then I'd stick with a Icom or Standard Horizon - both produce nice units.

We just got the 298 Vista. I will be replacing the speakers with Polk db651 and will be replacing the head unit with a new Kenwood MKR-700U

My recommendation is:
Garmin VHF 200 or VHF 200i which currently has a $55 rebate.
The Garmin VHF 200i provides full Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability via NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 connectivity.
Also, just released this week at the London Boat Show, The GHS20/20i wireless handset for the VHF 200i radio.
Quote:
Rugged, waterproof and simple to use, the GHS 20/20i offers a backlit LCD display, soft keys, a rotary knob to adjust the volume, squelch and channel selection, and a built-in speaker mic for use in loud environments. Using the intercom function, mariners can communicate with the base station, and the GHS 20/20i wireless handset also has a DSC distress function and 16/9 or 16+ channel selection right on the handset. The GHS 20/20i uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and has up to 18 hours of battery life. A charging cradle is sold with the handset.

I would also recommend the Kenwood MKR-700U, and Infinity 612M speakers instead of the Polk's. Having installed the 612M's last summer, and comparing them to the Polk's in a friends' boat, I feel the Infinity's had an overall better sound, and handle a touch more power.

You have to remember Cap'n...I put 8 of those Polk's in my H200...I am a fan.

Hi

Personal, I like Sony, but thats me!!!

On the VHF, as some one else mentioned DSC would be the way to go. BoatUS has a good explanation of it and you can register there too. Also, go with a NMEA 2000 unit. A lot SIMPLER to hook up.

I didn't mean to sound like I did not like the polk's, I do. They are darn good speakers for the money, I just wanted to offer an alternative that I personally have used, and like also. You can't go wrong either way.

Agreed. Your opinion is as valid as mine since we can both say we have tested "our" products and are satisfied with them.

Hi Richard

I just bought a "new" 2007 258v, dealer left over. Basicly, the radio is band new!!!! I will sell it for $50.00 plus shipping from Boston.

I am pulling that out, plus the Raymarine GPS with the antenna. I have better units from my last boat.
