Hello all.
My horn has suddenly stopped working and the culprit appears to be the wiring between it and the switch as there is power at the switch but none at the horn connection. I tried last season to remove the headliner to gain access to the underside of the deck where the horn is mounted but it looks like the upper cabinets will have to be removed as well and thats a job that I really don't want to get into.
Has anyone here had to replace the horn power wire? Do you think its possible to use the existing wire to pull a new one through?

Thoughts?

I would check on the otherside of switch before pulling wires. Put test light on opp. side of power and press switch and see if if lights up.

Oh and buy the way, some horns the back comes off to change the inners

Did check switch and its ok. Definitely the wire thats at fault. It just looks to be almost impossible to get to the underside of the horn mount to replace wire without some major stripping out of interior items.

I think I'll try using the old wire to pull a new wire through. As long as its not attached to anything between the headliner and the deck, it should work. Just thought I'd check to see if anyone else has had to do this.

Many devices have in-line connectors. I'd imagine the horn would. If it did you'd be unable to just pull the wires through.

What does it show on the schematic in the owners manual?

The headliner is only held in with velcro?

Thats how mine was, it is like a 4" wide velcro running along every seam and throughout the middle as well. I took mine down to run some new speaker cables and remote control wiring. Its pretty heavy duty velcro and does a good job holding mine up.

DrBallard....this is GREAT news. As I get more familiar with my 298 and start planning a new audio system...I have been wondering how the heck I am going to run wires for the new remotes and such.....THANKS!!!

when the headiner is removed, there is a ceiling panel, and about 1-3 inches of space between that and the fiberglass of the boat, depending on the area of the boat. There are also some large circles or access areas where you are able run cables to the horn or wherever you need so they are not between the ceiling and the headliner. Now the horn on my boat is directly above the cabinet which is probably the challenge more then actually removing the headliner.

Exactly.... and thats my problem. I'm trying to avoid removal of the cabinets.
I'll have a closer look at it in the spring. Its shrink wrapped now and under 4 feet of snow.

If the horn is indeed toast or you need to wire a new one you could always just install a new one in a different place, either on the radar arch, or the other side of the bow where there isnt a cabinet. Then either leave the broken horn or remove it and figure out a way to fill in the hole. Another thought, you could remove the horn, drill the hole through the top of the cabinet and feed your wires through the inside of the cabinets. Its not ideal but the wires would be hidden when the doors are closed. I just think those cabinets are going to be a PITA to remove.

Agreed about the PITA.

This could be a good idea as the cabinet affected is the one with the microwave so it would hide any new wires.
I think though to remove the horn you need to gain access to the underside of the deck to remove the nuts.

My boat is in inside storage and I have to go to it this week to check on my moisture absorbers so while I am there I will check how the headliner fits into the cabinet and if there is an access hole there. thats pretty much the area I accessed when I ran my remote wire to the helm. I will try and take some pictures if I can.
