I ordered a 16K BTU a/c system to replace my 8 yr old working 12K BTU factory Cruisair system. With the 12K unit, even with towels over the hatches the system is unable to maintain 75F cabin temperature on 90+ days especially when the water temps get into the high 80's. The 12K system works fine, has the right Freon charge and there is adquate water flow too.

What I've learned though is that Four Winns really didn't have the minimum required return air area outlined by Cruisair for even the factory 12K system. Cruisair recommends 130 sq in of area and what's in my boat is one 10 by 10 inch grill which has a filtered size of 8.5" square. This amounts to nearly half the minimum area. The 16K unit needs a minimum of 160 sq in so I'm adding two 5 by 10 grills to get what's needed.

Also, not sure if anyone has noticed but FW put an unfiltered return air 'slot' in the galley seat base in the area just next to the A/C system. This help the return air but is horrible since dirt and lint are directly sucked into the filter on the evaporator coil. By the way, supply air grill area is very good on the system and well within Cruisair specs.

Finally got to test the new 16K BTU A/C this weekend on a 95F ambient day. This was a fairly involved project, not complicated, more time consuming than anything else but the results are incredible! All I can say is WOW! All my expectations are exceeded. The A/C unti easily cooled the cabin to 70F in minutes and even held that while we were microwaving and cooking on the stove. This is by far one of the best improvements I've made on the boat. The cooling is great and the unit is quiet. Very pleased :D :D

Awesome results. My A/C has quite a bit of condensation built up and acguy is working with me to make sure things check out on the system. I think I may have an air flow issue (it appears mine is an aftermarket) where not enough air is entering the compartment and causing condensation to build up and not evaporate (like intended). I may have to add a vent for more airflow.

Congrats on the new A/C....

Good to hear.

I replaced my 5k system with the new designed 8k system. Same footprint, BIG difference. I think the colored hulls have an effect on it.

I was docked with a 268 and 278, their AC was doing fine but mine couldn't keep up. Now we can turn it into a freezer if we want!
