If it is a Sony, you need that flat key. I am not sure what to call it, but if you down load the manual you will see it.

If it's a Clarion it should only be those four screws. I don't recall there being any sort of 'cage' for the Clarion radios (at least not the XMD3 in my 348).

If your breaker panel is hinged you may be able to open it and get to the back of the radio. This way you can disconnect the plug from the back of the radio, as that is what's probably keep it from being pulled out. I couldn't do this on my 348 as the back of the radio wasn't accessible from there. To get to it I had to come up from underneath, via the adjacent AC grille panel. Damn near had to be a circus contortionist to get to it.

I had the same problem with mine. Believe or not, mine had a metal strap connected to it. Have no idea why, since the four screws would keep it from going anywhere. I could not get to the screw holding the strap to the radio, so I just worked it back and forth until the strap broke.

Ah, a metal strap connected at the back of the radio? That's typically used to help hold up the weight of the radio. It's held on at the back by a single nut on a post. Not sure how necessary it is given the four screws around the front (but it can't hurt).

It's a tough call on getting things mounted in a boat. On one hand you want everything to be secured because anything wiggling due to boat motions runs the risk of breaking or causing sparks. On the other hand you want to be able to remove stuff, so some slack is sometimes needed.

Is there any way to access the back of the panel in the boat?

He may have to access the back of the panel thru the mid cabin. Here is his approx. set up. Or pull out the panels far enough
to reach down to the HU.

I just experieced this when replacing the DVD player. It to had the metal strap, and it wasnt easy to get to to unhook. I am finding out though there isnt anything easy to get to on boats. I just had to replace the antisiphon valves, that a whole nother story!
