Post subject:  water heater
So, I spent Saturday morning replacing the heating element the 6 gallon Atwood water heater. Filled the water tank up, then turned on the hot water in the sink (to fill up the water heater) then flipped the switch for the water heater. 5 minutes...no hot water, 10 minutes...no hot water, 20 minutes no hot water. I did improve the water flow in the sink by taking off the screens and cleaning them out. :) Before I purchase another water heater, is there something else I am missing, ie. fuse, breaker, etc.?

I just had an issue with mine, it was the thermostat. It would over heat the water and the over temp stat would kick out. You can reset the overheat stat, but it kept happening. Here is the part. So cheap I bought an extra 1.

I call them thermal fuses (it over heats and opens up) , in the center, there should be a reset or a reset switch. I have been told, depending on the year they could be different.

If Jeff's suggestion does not work, let us know. It could be a connector, new boat, no hot water. I can tell you how to check it.

Great stuff...Thanks so much for the options. I will give it a try before this weekend. The Captain was getting a little "grouchy" about being out on the hook with no hot water... We were even looking at the solar bag option... which would do in a pinch, but I really like to have everything on the boat working. :) Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

You should be able to run the motor and have hot water in a pinch. I have been dealing with my issue since last fall.

Here is an easy to see if it working without waiting for the water to get hot. Just turn off the breaker for the water heater, and turn it back on. Watch your shoreline/volt gauge, mine will dip slightly when I turn it back on when the water is cold from the current draw.

As I recall the heater element and the thermostat pickup are separate. You'd have to check the voltage levels at the heater. Since you've already replaced the element it would be reasonable to assume the new one is OK. But start by checking the input voltage to the element. If there's voltage going to it then the new one itself is bad, it can happen. If there's no voltage then check the connector on the wire to the harness. I found the connector was a little tricky to properly click together. Then check that there's proper voltage at the connector and to the thermostat on the heater itself. If the thermostat is getting power but not passing it then you might have to replace it too.
