Has anyone recharged their a/c? Boat is there and I'm (at the marina) here (stuck at work). Just curious if it is similar to recharging an automotive system and what type of refrigerant to use. She was sweating pretty good. Usually ann indication of low refrigerant.

The unit is serviceable, but it is more like a residential unit vs. automotive.

I have not serviced the unit on our boat, but have checked everything out thinking it needed service.
Test ambient air temp vs temp of air coming out of unit. If there is a 20 deg difference, then your still OK. If not, you will need a set of gages and check pressures on both the low and high side. I do not recall exact numbers of the top of my head, but if you get to that point I can get them.

If you can get the numbers, that would work. My Father in Law is an HVAC guys so guages aren't a problem. I'd like to have the numbers so when I'm testing, I can charge at the same time.

If you have a HVAC guy in the family, your set. He would have better idea of numbers than I could provide.

Still you need to check performance of unit to see if you even need to charge. If it is blowing 20 deg cooler than ambient, no need to go further and risk overcharging and damage compressor.

When you say "She was sweating pretty good" to me that just means that relative humidity is high, not an indicator of how the unit is performing. But I am not a HVAC guy, but have tinkered with home, auto and RV units.

What exactly is sweating. If it is the suction line you are referring to than that is a good thing. YOU SHOULD NEVER NEED TO ADD REFRIGERANT TO SYSTEM UNLESS YOU HAVE A LEAK!

If you have access to guages you can check the operating pressures. You are looking for around 60psi on the low side or if you convert that pressure to temperature it should be approx 38F.


What makes you think it is low on refrigerant. What is the discharge air temp.
