Our dealer has a '06 278 that he's willing to part with for $82K. It's got almost everything except a NAV system.

Is this a competitive price?

The dealer here in CT has an 06 left over for 69k Loaded with everything except electronics and an 07 for 75K. they are both at G&R Marine. Bryan usually orders his boats loaded from the factory.

Wow, that's a HUGE difference. Since we just started looking, I wasn't sure if that was out of line or not.

I've scanned the "window sticker"; maybe someone can tell me how my dealer thinks $82K is a good deal, then? It does include a trailer, which adds a bit.

And since we're on the topic. What's to stop me from buying a boat in CT and having it brought here? WHen you're talking the price difference of over $10K, the cost of having someone trailer a boat from CT to AL can't be that much.

Shan,

Probably $2.00 a mile with current gas prices, maybe $2.50 a mile.

You could always go for a trip and pick it up. I drove back to back from PA to IL and back to PA to get my 230SX when I bought it. 18 hour trip :)

I was going to say that I thought that price was high. I just bought a loaded 248 for 57K (30 hours on it) but could have picked from any number of 248's on his showroom floor for 62K (not quite as many options as the one I bought) and he had 258's and 278's as well, but I didn't check the price on the 278's.

I am leaving here in a few minutes to go pick up my 248. I will see what sort of price the dealer has on the 278's when I am there (if I don't forget in all the excitement!) :)

Check G&Rs web site They have a few listed there. I know that they actually sold one to guy in greece and shipped it there. They are really good people up there.

I don't think 82K is good for a "left-over" A pretty loaded 278 comes in at about $99k per FW website. 20% off MSRP is pretty standard as a boat show discount. Figure 30% off as you are getting hit with a year's depreciation puts it at ~$70K

The LIST price is $110,729. The "standard boat package is $86,200 but it's got a lot of extras (CLICK HERE):

$110,729
-33,218 <<<-- less 30%
------------
$77,510

So, jvalich, at $82,900 he's out of line by about $5K, you're saying?

G&R shows this:

Quote:
2006 28 ft FOUR WINNS 278 VISTA WHITE/WGREEN ACCENT 5.7Gi/DP/HEAT&AIR/WINDLASS/LOADED 65,000/W REBATE

2007 28 ft FOUR WINNS 278 VISTA WHITE/wCOPPER ACCENT Volvo5.7GXi/DP/320 HP $79,900.00/W REBATE

They also still show the after rebate prices, which ended March 31st. Considering it's next to impossible to compare these side by side without knowing the options, the website just doesn't tell me much; the generator option is over $9K option.

Usually any boat that G&R has is loaded. Bryan rarely orders a stripped boat. Just as an example he had an 06 288 loaded with everything including stainless header, subwoofer, windless and genny for 108kbefore the rebate from FW. I was thinking about it myself, but decided to wait for now

$108K is a darn good price. I paid $106K for mine in Oct 2003. I did get $38.5K as a trade allowance for my 2000 248 Vista. I bought if from the same dealer used for $42K when is was 6 months old. For 3 yrs of use, I lost very very little.

I appreciate the input in this thread.

I went to NADA and the value of the 278 ranges wildly from $72K to $89K. I realize that's for a used boat, so the comparison isn't great.

The other issue I have to contend with is my existing boat. I bought an '06 Funship from them (local dealer) last July. It's not got 19.8 hours on it and it flawless - and I mean flawless. To sell that boat outright, in a private sale, would take too long and frankly I don't want the hassle.

According to NADA there should be no problem walking away from it, as a trade in, owing nothing; in fact average retail exceeds what we owe.

Give me your thoughts on this. Even trade in for the Funship, keep the Vista trailer (we'll wet slip) and I pay $80K.

The intangible here is the dealer. They are absolutely fantastic. I know they would be no matter where I bought a Four Winns, but what about a sea trial? If I bought a boat from CT, I'd have to deal with shipping it. Then, I'd have no one to show me to use the thing. I'm not new to boating, but I am new to boat like a Vista. And, again, I'd have to mess around with selling my existing boat.

I'm not necessarily trying to justify the price in my head, but I'm playing devil's advocate. There's more to this than the bottom line price. It can be leverage in the negotiation, but there are other considerations for me.

What to do... :?

Don't underestimate a good relationship with your local dealer. Saving a couple thousand and being at the bottom of the service list because you didn't get the boat from them may bite you in the future.

Thanks for the heads up on G&R, I'd never heard of them before now.

I've been talking to Bryan, he's really down to earth and honest. I'll work something out, either way.
