I did a search, and found some good details on issues that folks have had with the vacuflush setups. The admiral and I were out for an overnight during the weekend. It's evening time, and I'm topside when I hear 'oh, honey!'. The admiral knows to call for help before making anything worse when we're on the boat... I came down to find the ball valve on the vacuflush stuck open. Yeah, that's awesome. I mean, it was stuck. Hit the pedal, nothing. I had to dive in and push it closed... and it was still stuck. Ended up tinkering around long enought to get it to seal with some fresh water in the closed position so we didn't smell up the cabin. The next morning, I pulled the bowl off, and was tinkering around with things. It looks like the plastic shaft just isn't cutting it any longer. I got it fixed, but it still knocks itself off after a couple of pedal pumps. And when it's all closed up, I can't get the vacuum pump to prime. It just runs and runs and runs. I'm going to order what I think are the right parts for a 'rebuild kit' 385316140 - Bowl Seal Kit $35.70 385318162 - Ball, Shaft & Spring Cartridge kit $42.61 Do I need anything else? Can anyone confirm I found the right part numbers? |

Thats not the number I show for the shaft, cartidge and ball valve kit but at any rate there is a new shaft available which is made from brass, not the plastic ones so I would make sure you get the brass one. Consider yourself luck that you got 4 yrs out of you original one |

The seal on mine has started to leak. Should I also replace the shaft if it's a plastic one? Is there a way to tell externally what's in there now? I'd rather be able to order the right parts ahead of time, rather than leave the whole thing pulled apart (or have to do it twice). |

Looking up PartyCove's number - that looks to be the plastic shaft. The number I posted appears to be the brass shaft. I'm going to call Sealand (Dometic) today and get the skinny on things. Bill -- can you check your manual and see if you have a 5000 series vacuflush (you probably do). I'll post the results of my discussion with the Sealand folks. |

The correct part numbers have been verified. I called Sealand and was pushed over to marine sanitation (which is in Seattle next door to my favorite supply shop) I told them my problem, and they confirmed it is probably the cartridge and ball valve. And yes, I might as well replace the bowl seal. The correct part number for our systems are: 385316140 - Bowl Seal Kit $35.70 385318162 - Ball, Shaft & Spring Cartridge kit $42.61 I asked about Partycove's part number in his diagram and that one is for an eco-valve toilet or something? If you can't take the side cover off the pedal - then you need Partycove's number. The one above is the brass shaft model and fits the standard 5000 series vacuflush toilets. Hopefully this fixes it! |

I don't have the manuals here, they're at the boat. I'll check when I'm down there next (possibly this Thursday). Thanks for the research. If I don't already have the brass shaft then I'm just going to replace mine. I have to replace the bowl seals anyway, might as well do all the crappy work at once. |

As it turns out... nobody was right. So, I picked up the parts I listed above... TUrns out -- the ball, catridge, shaft is not the correct one. There is a replacement available that has a plastic shaft... and a different part if you want the brass shaft. If you get in touch with http://www.marinesan.com - they are well versed in marine plumbing. I was in their store today. The correct valve/shaft combo is a 385310954. It runs about $50 and fits our model 5148 toilets with the rear discharge. Here's where we get wacky - the bowl seals 385316140 - Bowl Seal Kit -- is still a valid part number. Some of these, however - have an overflow hole. Some of them do not. Our toilets do NOT need to overflow hole. If you get one with the overflow hole, then when you lay down the rubber seal over the teflon seal, offset the holes. Easy workaround. This is been a process for me... because I wanted that brass shaft. Dometic apparently likes to change part numbers around. |
