Post subject:  Ice Maker Use

I'm interested in the use of the ice maker on my V328. It's only 120V so will only operate at shore or when the gen is running.

How do you use your ice maker? Do you just make ice while at the dock and then move the ice to a cooler (where the beer is of course) when you leave the dock? I'm thinking any ice left in the ice maker will turn into a big puddle or is there enough insulation to keep it solid for a period of time?

I see mention of people switching it out for another refrigerator, is that because it just isn't practical?

Thanks,

Steve.

We run the ice maker through the week, so there is no delay in Friday eve cocktails on the dock. Also in case we happen to sneak out during the week for a little get away. When we leave the dock, I usually leave all the ice in the ice maker until there is enough room in the cooler to replenish or usually the blender comes out sometime on Sat. Yes it will melt during the day, but if you don't open the door you'll be surprised how cold it stays. Good place to store jello shots also.
That being said, If had to choose I probably would have picked the fridge instead, but it hasn't been enough of an issue to swap it out.

We dont use ours to make ice. With the hot temps here and water "sitting" in the holding tank, we dont drink the water so I dont use it to make ice. Typically, I just grab a bag of ice and toss it in there. I also put a bunch of whatever we are drinking in there to make it easy to get to. We have no problem with ours keeping the ice solid/cold. When it dies, I will change it to a fridge as it just makes more sense to me for our needs.

We don't use ours. It came with the boat. I plan on replacing it with a fridge at some point.

It does stay cold inside. Ice made keeps for at least a day when off shore power. I have used it to store an extra bag of ice. Just dump the ice it makes into the cooler and then put the bag in there.

I turned the icemaker function off and use it as a freezer because I really don't like using ice for my drinks that appears grayish-yellow. I wish they made just a freezer that size without the icemaker function.

We use ours strictly as a freezer. We like to put frozen packages of meat for meals, and small icecreams.

I am going to pull the freexer at end of season and remove the icemaker assembly so as to make more room.

MIne was replaced with a refrigerator by the previous owner. Just have a bag of ice for mixing drinks.

Which fridge did they go with? And how does it look? The icemaker is taller and skinnier than most fridges I've found. I'm debating how to handle the change in size.

I use mine to make ice for my cooler that I leave on the platform or I will throw an extra bag of ice in the ice maker with the float wire in the up position and it stops making ice. I will start the gen every 5 or 6 hours, just for a couple of mins, it keeps the ice in good shape.

I *wish* there was a place up top for an ice maker on the 248. Preferably one that spit out Sonic style ice.

I don't remember off the top of my head, but I think it is Norcold. You will probably recognize it from the pic below. The width fits perfectly, but the refrigerator was shorter than the original ice maker. The previous owner built a platform and covered it with some sheet of fiberglass or similar material. It is not the cleanest job, but I never noticed it until I was removing the refrig to access the outlet behind it. Now I notice it, and will do a better job at some point.

If you are interested in the model #, I can get it this weekend.

Hey, thanks for the picture. That's what I suspected. I may build a platform for the replacement but fashion a grille at the bottom to allow for better air circulation, and then put one up in the cabinet behind the grab rail. This to get air working by convection, bottom to top.

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the ice maker from the unit. There are two visible screws on the inside, but after removing them, it still won't budge. It's a ULine unit....nothing in the owners manual.
