Post subject:  New Prop

I had shared with everyone about my weekend to Catalina and the long tow home from being stranded out in the middle of the ocean. It turns out that the prop hub spun, which was good news! For background info purposes, I have a 2000 Vista 268 with a 5.7GS and SX outdrive, kept at sea level. It turned out that the previous owner had installed a 15 x 19 prop, which has much more pitch than the Four Winns recommended 15. So the mechanic recommended a 15 x 17 prop for me, given that I didnt have a real good idea of what my WOT rpm was and speed, or to go with a 15 x 16 four blade. I am either going to order online or go through West Marine. I was looking at http://www.propline.com. Anyone have any thoughts on props sizes, websites, blades, etc. I realize this is almost as descriminate as asking everyone's favorite color, but any input is much appreciatted.

Honestly, I would find out what came on it from the factory and go with that.

If I read the spec sheet correctly on the FW site, it looks like they call out a 15 1/2 X 15?

Glad it was just a spun prop! As far as where to buy....WM=convenient, but relatively expensive. If you're in a rush, buy it there; if not, you can probably do better online.

Loooks like $129 from WM for a Mercury Marine prop - not too bad actually...

I bought a mercury prop from west marine this morning. 15 x 17, but they said I can try it out and take it back if I don't like the pitch. However, i had to buy a hub kit, as in the prop is common for different drives but has a blank for a hub specific to the drive to be inserted. Anyone ever have any problems with these blank props versus a prop with correct forged hub?

Thanks for all your comments!

I've used the universal props with the hub kits on an SX before and they worked fine. But it was on a smaller boat with less power, cant hurt to try. Just bring a spare in case, nice thing about an SX is props are cheap.

Great news for once on boating problems for me. Turned out it was indeed the prop and the new 17 pitch prop made a huge difference in how the boat was running. The generic hub prop from west marine seemed a little goofy as my diver and I were monkeying with it, but I will let everyone know how it works out. Thanks everyone for your comments.
