VDO Gauge

Post subject:  VDO Gauge
I've got 2 VDO gauges that don't work correctly.

1. Port tach reads 500 or so rpm low, when you tap it it jumps a bit higher but then goes back down. The mechanic says it's likely the metal spring in the gauge is tired so I'll need a new one. Can they be purchased from the dealer?

2. Synchronization gauge doesn't move at all, I'm guessing there is a wiring issue there somewhere or possibly the gauge.

Anyone had the same issues? What was the solution?

Sure they are cheap, but I want them to look the same as the original.

Interesting you bring this up. My sync gauge never seems to be right/close. I simply "try" to keep the RPM's according to the tachs at the same spot, but even still struggle with that.

Aren't most gauges sealed? That'd make it hard to do any replacement work in the field. I suppose it might possible to get a gauge refurbished, but as has been pointed out, they're not terribly expensive to replace outright.

When I ran a search for refurb gauges one interesting link came up: http://www.oldboatgauges.com/

Don't know VDO gauges, but perhaps there's a model number on the back of it? That might aid in finding a matching replacement.

Interesting sites - yes I was planning on replacing the entire gauge.

On my 328 the sync gauge is very important to keep both motors in sync otherwise you can tell that one motor is working more as you get a funny revving noise. My rpm gauges are slightly different. Without my sync gauge, I think it would be hard to get both motors at the same rpm.

I found a signal wire had come off my sync gauge so I'm hoping that will fix it. Maybe, just maybe something with an easy fix, well see when I take it out next.
