Post subject:  Flushing the Freshwater System on a 348
Hi Guys,
As some of you know I will be getting my "new to me" 348 on Saturday and taking it to my marina. The boat has been sitting for about 8 months before we put it in the water for the sea trial and survey. I was reading the manual and it mentioned that I need to flush the boats water system with clorox and fresh water before I fill up the freshwater tank. I am fine with doing that, but the question I have is where do I put the clorox to flush the lines out at? Obviously it has a grey water system and the water will go into there which then I have to get pumped out, is there a way to flush the system and it go overboard? If not it isnt a big deal, but I thought if i run the lines full of clorox for a period of time, the grey water system is going to be filled really quickly. So actually two questions:

1. Where do I put in the clorox bleach?
2. Is there a way of draining just the old water out of the boat so I dont have to go to a pump out station?

Any other ideas would be helpful!

The bleach would go into your fresh water holding tank. Some boaters claim, pour in about 2 cups of bleach and fill your holding tank about 1/2 to 2/3 fill and let the water slosh around for 2 or 3 hours. You could take the boat out for a ride. As far as "gray water" here in New England, there are no laws on this. So mine drains over board.

I would check the gray water tank for a plug that could be used to drain it.

I just realized your from Hingham!! Thats were I bought my boat!!

As I mentioned, there are no laws on this were we are. (At leat none that I know of.) So I try not to use anything that would be harmful to the environment. But if it were my boat, I might think about draining the sinks over board & take out the gray water tank.

I did ask one of the USCG on that about 2 years ago. He did state that there trying to enact a law on that but it has not gone though. PLEASE, if you know more on this, I would be happy to know.

I beleive my freshwater holding tank is in the bilge? Is there a cap i unscrew and pour the bleach into?


Regarding the grey water, I am confused. You say there are no laws on this, but isnt "grey water" also the waste water from the head? Maybe I am not thinking right. If it isnt, how do I drain the grey water out of the boat? Is there valve to open?

I have called it that TOO and got yelled it!! Gray water is sink waste water and "black" water is POO POO water.

I am just surprised that there is a gray water system. Unless the laws have changed!!

From what I have been told and read, it should be 2 different tanks. None of my boats, this one & the past 4 has never had a gray water system. But I can't see why 2 tanks would be needed.

I just came to mind that you "MIGHT" be reading from the manual and you really don't have a gray water system. Have you gone over this with Jack or John??

This Saturday we are planning a trip to Peddocks if you would like to come. I could tell you better than.

I haven't talked to Jack as of yet. The manual says all the 348 have the grey water system, so I assumed.
I will talk with them when I get the boat back.
I will be driving from Hyannis to hingham in the boat. Once I get the boat back, my wife wants to get it cleaned to her standards and load all our things on it, so we probably can't do Saturday. I will
Be out on it on Sunday all day. Maybe worlds end, not sure yet.

You should not have a gray water system unless it was a lake boat. Lake Winnipesaukee and all NH lakes require gray water systems, as well as Lake George in NY and other lakes.

The easiest way to find out, is look for a second pump-out next to the black water pump out. The tanks are like this:

Fresh Water - under the front vee berth, fill is near the bow on the starboard side.

Gray Water - under the seat in the aft cabin starboard side - pump out is on the starboard gunnel forward of the black water, it's labled "Waste" not to be confuse with the one labeled "Fuel"

Black Water - under the floor of the main cabin- pump out is on the starboard gunnel, it's labled "Waste" not to be confuse with the one labeled "Fuel"

I have a gray water system. When I flush the system I put bleach into the fresh water tank through the fill. I drain small amount out each faucet, into the drains and then the gray water tank. I drain the bulk of the water using the transom shower, which drains directly overboard.

The other easy way. Just run the sink out side/the wetbar, I BET you will find it dumping over board. I thought you might be reading the manual. Jack likes to give it to you before you get the boat!! You know, light reading.
