Post subject: | Water in the Engine Room |
I have 07 278 Vista. Is it common to have water in the engine room? Last night I turned on the bilge and a far amount of water was discharged. This left a small amount of water in the bottom that I removed with a wet-dry vac. New at this and wanted to know if I should be worried. Thanks for the advice? |

There are various ways for water, usually from rain or snow, to get into the bilge. A heavy rain can put quite a bit of water into the bilge. Just how long did your pump run? How many gallons did it pump out? I'd have that pump checked to see why it didn't run automatically. But if there wasn't any precipitation then you'd want to FIND whatever is leaking. It could be any number of things. If you've got shore hookup for water start by removing it (and get a flow guardian). Then start checking the various hole-through fittings; there's a lot of them. There are water pickups for cooling the engine, generator and air conditioning. There are sea cocks for each of these, check around them for moisture. Then check the hoses that lead from them. Hoses and clamps eventually rot out. If it's an inboard them check the prop shaft bearing and/or stuffing box. If it's an I/O then check the bellows on the outdrive (and it's other hoses). |

Does the A/C condinsation drain in the bilge? That can put a fair amount of water in there. If not the bilge should remain dry. |
