Post subject:  New to the forums!

Greetings everyone!

I recently purchased a new (to me) 2003 FW Vista 268 back in September. I took the boat out about eight times before winterizing it in early November. So far it's been a blast to own (although not without it's problems initially), and can't wait for the boating season to get fired up again. I plan on keeping it slipped here at Pilot House Marina in Woodbridge, VA -- off the Potomac River. For now, it's kept on a trailer until the warmer air prevails

I'm working on a few projects on the boat, including removing the outdrive to perform maintenance on/replace the bellows, as well as greasing the u-joints among other things. I noticed that on one of the trim cylinders on the outdrive, I have a very slow hydraulic leak. Seems like about a good teaspoon of fluid will escape through the cylinder when the drive is fully raised then lowered. When left in the lowered position (as it is now), it will continue to drip another teaspoon out before completely stopping until the trim is actuated again. Anyone have any recommendations to service this part? Do they make a reseal kit for this? From the limited searching I've done through google, I can't seem to locate a reseal kit made by anyone reputable, and that some owners have just resorted to replacing the cylinder at a cost of about $500 (ouch!)

Thanks for your help :D I look forward to meeting other FW owners out there!

Welcome. VP used to supply reseal kits for the cylinders. The manual for the 1999 ones includes clear instructions. They no longer supply the replacement seals, probably they'll say partially due to them being less than 100% succesful, but also because they make a whole lot more money if they sell a complete cylinder !!

You've got time to look: I'd be very surprised if the seals are anything but standard hydraulic seals any hydraulic specialist can get hold of. What you'd have to look out for though is scoring of the rod; new seals won't cure the effect of that.

Graham, good point. Sometime either this weekend or next, I'll take apart of the cylinder to see what the deal is.

Thanks for the replies!

Welcome!

VP stopped selling all pressure seals (trim and steering) for whatever reason a few years ago. It wasn't always a 100% fix if anything has scratches/pitting on it and people complained about being ripped off from dealers because their heavily oxidized and corroded ram still leaked with a new seal. Bring the thing to any "good ole boys" hydraulic repair shop and they'll fix it up right if the ram doesn't have any pits or scratches on it.

The diagram is for the earlier type of cylinder ( "LK" MY, something like 1996 I think). Later cylinders are for sure different externally, but maybe the internal construction uses the same seals ? . Diagrams for the later ones do not seem to show a seal kit.

That kit (#3854247) shows up as discontinued/ unavailable in Europe; it seems there are remaining stocks in the US ! We should maybe all buy some "while stock last "!!!

Thanks for all the assistance guys. Yeah, the diagram for the cylinder does appear different than mine. As Graham said, It could be that the seals are the same perhaps?

I did find this part on ebay as well:

On Monday I'll have the cylinder apart and have a better idea of what I'm dealing with :o
