I just bought a compact freezer 1.5 cuft for $179 (Free shipping) at: http://www.compactappliance.com/CRF150SS-EdgeStar-Compact-Stainless-Steel-Freezer-With-Lock/CRF150SS,default,pd.html?cgid=Appliances-Refrigerators http://www.compactappliance.com/CRF150S ... rigerators The thing is awesome. Had it plugged in for three weeks in my son's room. It can be set as a freezer, or you can turn it up and have it set as a refrigerator!! I have tested it as both. Very quiet and power efficient. Another version they have meets Medical requirments! Had called around to these Marine companies liek Dometic etc and they wanted outrageous money (>$1000). At those prices I could buy one of these every year for 5 years! It is 5 inches shorter (No problem goona add a top-plate with fans sort of like I saw a POSTER name JNIZI). I have a thermostat conttolled set of fans to install. Same depth. 4" wider. Gonna make room between compartments, possibly remove door. If I cant I will give to my son for college. Only about 150 watts, gonna power off a small inverter I have during any extended nights on the hook. |

As I recall there's not a lot of extra width in the 348 cockpit fridge area. The existing unit is pretty close to the divider to the storage locker just forward of it. That and the fiberglass frame curve seems a bit tight. Maybe enough for 2" more, but 4 inches? Be sure to take into account the swing needed for the door. By going with a wider unit the swing area needed for the door will be wider too. That might interfere with the acrylic outer door. So even if you had enough room to the left of the fridge you'd have to worry about the door not being able to open. Provided it was shallow enough to fit between the frame and the door. I don't know about the depth as I've not removed my icemaker to check behind it. I may be replacing my galley fridge as it didn't seem to be working when I was on the boat recommissioning it last week. But didn't check too closely on it. I've already had it fixed once for a cracked tube that let all the coolant out. Don't know that I'd be willing to do that again versus pitching it and getting a different brand entirely. Trouble is they ALL suck, and cost way too much for the hassle. |

yeah bill, It is a bit too wide but am going to cut the center separator up to the fridge height. will slide the inernal wall over a little. outer doors will still close. Gonna add a horizontal and vertical brace. will have room above the fridge but am gonna cut a panel out of thin plastice. I will mount two fans in this plastic mount for cooling. I will have to drill some holes in out door for airflow to these fans. I will be left with a much larger fridge/freezer (we will use as freezer) that only costs $179. I can buy six of them for the price of the custom crap from these marine companies. Cost is the pain of reshaping the cabinet area. All of these small fridges sold for home/hospital are all this wide so they are not built to fall over. Little bit of a project but I think we will be very happy in the long run. I will post a pic in a couple of weeks when I am finished. Anybody want to buy the used icemaker????? |
