Post subject:  Leaky windows '99 258
I thought I had seen this before, but I could not find it. We hadn't been out in the rain much until Sunday night/Monday morning. When we got back to the slip, we noticed the walls under the windows and even down into the storage area under the seats were wet. any ideas of why the windows are leaking and where to start to fix them?

water collects in the port hole opening and when you open the window,

gravity takes over!!!

They are small with three latches on the inside. I don't think they leak or would have leaked as much as they did between the closed window and the seal, but then by the time we found it the rain was over. It that the most likely place or some other spot? Since the three that matter all leaked similarly, maybe it is the rubber seal. :?:

How easy are they windows to remove so I could caulk and put back in? Can you get new rubber seals if that is the issue?

We may have to have a simulated rain storm.

I need to replace one of the screens on ours.

I upgraded the port lights on my 1999 258 from "fixed" portlights from the factory to the opening ones. Same problem here but on my portlights there are screws that hold on the tabs that hold the window tightly closed. These can be tightened for a tighter seal. Dont go be replacing seals just yet! Mine have done this since new (and I bought them brand spankin' new). If you have the "knobs" with a screw in the middle, tighten the screw and you will get a tighter seal portlight to seal. 8)

If they are the same port windows as my 248 has (oval BOMAR) the three fingers that secure the window shut, have a small recessed straight blade adjustment at the tip where they touch the window glass. Do not try to tighten the screws that secure the fingers to the frame!

Also make sure the seals are clean and free of debris and if they are on an older boat it wouldn't hurt to wash the seals with some dish detergent and warm watter and then give them a coat of some sort of rubber protectant of your choosing.

I have a 1999 238 Vista that I bought last year from Halls in Grand Haven. What a mess. There were water stains below the windows in the headliner, but I was ASSURED by the salesman that it was because he personally left the windows open during a storm (due to where they are located on the 1999's the water would flow right in), and NOT because of a leaking problem.

Sure enough, after I bought it, cleaned everything and 3 rainy days later, I had 1/4 inch of standing water on the floor of the cabin.

Called the owner of Halls, he wouldn't back up what the salesman said and even told me there was a recall on the window from FW. He quoted me at cost (for the windows) + labor at $650 which I had to do. Mold, mildew, etc. was overpowering and could never use it that way, let alone sell it.

I called FW to see if I could be covered under the recall, being I was only the 2nd owner but they (very tershly) stated that there was no such recall and their windows don't leak (safe to say I was not impressed with the factory boys, either).

Anyways, got the new windows, they are updated styling w/the chrome bezels and have a sloped gutter so the water doesn't accumulate for a splash when the window is opened.

Expensive, but had to be done.

Was that for 4 replacements windows? $650 for parts and labor? Have any idea how much the just the replacement windows costs? I might think about replacing them myself. Thanks

seems to me they are a coupla hundred bucks - each

the thing I didn't like is that there is a smaller opening with the new style.

The opening is a little smaller, but I like the screens as the old ones I had didn't even have them. Also, the better angle saves from all the accumulation you get from even a cruise in light chop.

I can't remember how much the actual windows were as it was late last year, but I check for the receipts. They gave them to me at cost (allegedly) because I hounded the owner for shoddy sales tactics, so to get it done at standard rates it could be even higher.
