My 278 has the fire extinguishing system installed, however that does not eliminate the requirement for a handheld unit; this much I know.

Can someone tell me where it's located? I can't believe I haven't seen it or that the dealer didn't point it out on the sea-trial.

Mine of course is an older model and I don't have an auto system, but I have two hadheld ones. One mounted under the steering wheel the other inside the cabin on the wall between the aft cabin and the stairs.

I have one that came with a "system", it's a halon system that is mounted in the engine compartment just for use in case of an engine fire

the other one I have is just a portable one which(as of this writing) isn't mounted anywhere!!!

If you have the auto system as an option there should be a large mounted extinguisher in the engine space. It is probably mounted on the bulkhead shared by the aft cabin. If your boat measures greater than 26' and you have a auto system you are still required to carry one B-I extinguisher.

These are MINIMUMS only. I have a B-I in the cabin and another mounted portside near the transom door along with the auto system in the engine space.

One other thing you should remember regarding these hand operated extinguishers, about twice a year we recommend turning them upside down and pounding on the bottom, then shaking the extinguisher. The retarded chemical (usually MAP) has a tendence to cake on the bottom greatly limiting their effectiveness should you ever need it.

The Automatic system is mounted in the engine compartment with an indicator at the helm. We are putting two handhelds on board our 258. One mounted at the helm under the dash and a second one below deck in the gallery or mid-berth. Maybe its overkill or the Boy Scout in me but that's what made sense to me. Extinguishers are cheap insurance and we hope we never have to use them.

Sounds to me like I have to go out and BUY one? Our 204 Funship came with one, mounted under one of the seats.

Do the Vistas NOT come with a handheld from Four Winns? Do I need to buy one?

My 230 Horizon did come with one as well but our 258 do not. We had to buy ours.

Our 348 'came with' a handheld one as part of the new boat kit supplied by the dealer.

If you hard mount an extinguisher make sure it's shaken up now and then. They do tend to settle. It's often a good idea to mount one at an angle to allow the rocking of the boat to help keep it mixed. I have one under the helm seat mounted with the nozzle slightly downward. This way it rocks back up to 'level' when we get up on plane. The other one's mounted nozzletilted up in the locker next to the ice maker in the cockpit. I keep a third one loose in the locker under the sofa in the main cabin. Extinguishers are cheap, keep more on board than 'required' and replace them when they expire. I try not to keep units all from one batch. No sense taking the risk of them all being defective from the same production run. If I buy three packs I put one in the boat, one in the kitchen and home and the other in the workshop shed.

That's where it came on my 248. I was suprised to see a red extinguisher I thought that all marine units were white. I checked it and sure enough it's USCG Reg'd.
