Post subject:  V358 - Oil change

Time for an Oil change on the V358. I'm way over due. Crusader manual indicates to change the oil after the first 25 hours, which I doubt the original owners ever did. Only because the oil filters are CRUSADER filters and not some generic compatible filters. I guess it is possible that they replaced with the CRUSADER filters, but highly doubtful. Boat has 150 hours on each engine now, so I figured I was pushing it. Next service interval in the book states 100 hours and then every year.

My last boat was easy to service the oil. Especially since it could be put on a trailer and has a thru hull fitting for the oil drain line. Not the case here. I knew it would have to be sucked out from the Oil dipstick. Last time I tried this on another boat, it took forever with a hand pump vacuum thing.

Bought this thing to get the job done faster:

Took about 8 minutes to suck out the oil from each motor. (crusader 6.0 mpi) Sat in the A/C and drank beer while the little pump got a good work out. :lol:

West Marine guy looked up the Crusader Oil Filter replacement incorrectly. Crusader Part 22679. I have to head back and return the wrong ones for the correct ones and install them tonight.

Tip: When removing the OIL FILTERS, use a zip lock bag. First break the oil filter free with your tool of choice. Before you twist the oil filter off to the point that oil starts cascading down the filter and on your hand / bilge, put a large zip lock bag over the filter and then twist it off. If done properly, the oil will spill into the bag and not your hands, engine, or bilge.

Also found that the starboard engine Oil Fill spout is hard to reach and impossible to fill with a gallon jug of oil, let alone a single quart. I saw some flexible funnels in the oil aisle at West Marine, so I guess I'll pick one up when swapping out the filters.

Good info for anyone who has not changed oil on that particular boat. I will say you are a glutten for punishment....... WM Oil filters, WM flex funnel, and the oil pump too ? Ahhhhh, the age of convenience having a WM close buy. Their stockholders will be thankful to you. :wink:

I have one of those Jabsco oil change pumps. With warm oil it brings a whole new meaning to the term six pump chump it's that fast. It just screws onto the dipstick. 5 quarts in literally like 20 seconds.

I have one of those pumps. They do work great but your's must be turbocharged. I can't pour the oil in the boat in 20 seconds much less suck 5 quarts out through the dipstick hole.

married = not single
divorced = single
dating = single

I'm sure at 29.365 years old you did not re-marry already. :wink: :mrgreen:

I have had good results with this extractor for my oil changes.

The 'tards behind the West Marine counter can't produce a compatible oil filter number for me to use. I can feel my West Marine stock drop as I post this.

I'm searching this forum for answers. I'm sure that if the Crusader 6.0 is a GM or Ford engine rebadged, I can pick one up at the local auto parts store before they close tonight.

2002ish Chevy Silverado/Surbaban/Escalade/H2/Yukon engine to be exact. Slight modifications for marine use of course.

Picked up a couple of Frams and they worked perfectly.

I was so pissed off at West Marine that I forgot to get the flexible funnel. Found a way to get the gallon jug of oil into the starboard engine just fine. Sucked, but it is doable.

Project complete.
