This was left on my boat by the previous owner and have no idea if it is important. Can you identify? It is about 4 inches long. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jcfSPIU2Pl8/T_yPV58fPxI/AAAAAAAABT0/a2aVf21q3Vw/s512/photo.JPG |

The previous owner was a canny Scotsman and the tool is a spurtle. A spurtle is a Scottish kitchen tool dating back to the 15th century. It's a rod-like instrument that is traditionally used to stir porridge and prevent it from becoming lumpy and later for scraping remnant oat grains from the quaich (wooden serving bowl). Tradition calls for using a spurtle only with your right hand and only in a clockwise direction – otherwise, you risk invoking evil spirits and bringing on bad luck. That's my best guess, for what it's worth. |

Maybe a spare 'key' (connects the motor to the above deck components) for the windlass? My wife has a spurtle, sure doesn't look like that! |

Does the boat have a windless on it. It looks like the shaft key that is used when the windless shaft is inserted into the motor |

Looks like a shaft key for an inboard propeller. |

It looks like a brass drift punch to me...maybe for releasing a prop, or other press fit item without damage. |
