I am kicking around the idea of selling my 2008 H240.

Any interest in a broker? If you don't like to deal with the hassle it is a great alternative. Well except for the fee they charge....
If not then all the above. Post everywhere for the most exposure...
In addition to boat trader there is Yacht Trader. The broker I used seemed to like them better and posts in both.

Can't say what your chances are. It depends a lot on your location. Spring is by far the better time to sell here in CT. Boats go so fast it is like there isn't a recession. Sold my boat in 2 weeks back in April and I think it was only posted for a week.

Well, the wife and I decided to list the boat for sale. I have been bouncing the idea around since last summer for the following reasons:

1. We don't use it much anymore. Why?
a. Kids start school in early August for the past 3 years. This gives us about 8 weeks of summer vacation. We travel to Lake Mead and Lake Mohave along the Colorado River for 3-5 day trips due to the 5-6 hour drive.
b. The kids are involved in high school sports and clubs which require a lot of weekend committments.
c. Wife's work schedule has changed so 3-day weekends are out.
2. I hate the idea of paying the note, insurance, and storage for something I am not using.

Wife and I are pretty bummed out about it (haven't told the kids and won't until sold) because we all really love having the boat but with in that last 3 summers we have used the boat less than 10 times.

I know this is the worst time of year to sell and don't expect to do so until next summer. I'll try CL, Yacht Tader, and Boat Trader. If that doesn't work than a broker.

Have any of you felt this way? If you did, why did you sell or not sell? Also, if you ahev sold a boat in the past, how close to NADA did you get on the sale of your boat. I owe less than what NADA lists as the boat's worth.

Having some of the same thoughts right now as you for exactly the same reasons. Love the boat--but we keep it 3 hours away from where we live and have used it less and less. Just can't bring myself to sell quite yet--but seriously have considered it. Next summer will be it. We either change our location preferences and move it closer to home or perhaps it is time to take a break and come back to boating in a few years when we are closer to retirement. This has been a frustrating decision to mull over and boating is supposed to be fun. Good luck!

You say you come down to Lake Mead and Mojave. I have heard a lot about a broker in this area named Brent Thompson @ imageboats.com I know he post ads in all of the above sites and his own. I personally have not dealt with him but word of month around the marina is he's honest and good guy to work and has done this for years. He too is also a boater. Hope this helps and good luck!

Sorry to hear you're selling. You are the exact type I bought my boat from and got a great deal. Don't tell your story to the buyer or broker.
If you don't want to get out of boating maybe a downgrade to something that doesn't need a lot of expense to keep it just to get out on the water once and a while. Like a small bowrider with an outboard. almost no maintenance and insurance will be cheap if trailered.

Try craigslist first. As far as pricing goes, it really depends on how fast you want to sell it.

I've had my best luck with brokers. Yes, they cost a fee but I've made more money after the fee then what I could have selling on craigslist/boattrader/ebay

I agree. They have the resources like boattrader.com and other sites they use as "go to" as well as foot traffic in their show rooms.
Ebay, you still need to pay and its a real hassle when buyers don't pay and you have to repost an auction.
Also, you give them the keys and they do all the work with the morons that show up and bother you for hours to never show up again as they promise.
Yeah, I have bitter feelings selling things...

i have done great with the 11 boats that i have sold on CL over the years. and before that i used the newspaper and boat trader.

"MEET ME AT THE LANDING AND LETS MAKE A DEAL" they always pay more once they have had a free boat ride.. Most of the time I toss in a free 38-48Q cooler and 2 new orange life vests and for some reason people think that adds $400 to the sale.. Hey accessories work, i won't lie people are lazy and to tell them just add beer and ice i sell more boats that way..

I sold my last boat with the broker, and I was able to keep it til it sold. They would just schedule viewings. I'm thinking about listing my boat with the marina this weekend. I promised myself I'd keep it until the value started getting close to what I paid (14,5) and it's worth around 18,5 right now. If I want to get that 248 I've been talking about I need to sell soon. If I sell my boat this winter, come next spring I'll be in perfect shape to get a beautiful 248 and that's pretty much where I plan to stop for a few years. It was my original plan since I owned the H180, got a little detoured.

Until I can get a used H290 for around 30k :)

We sold our last boat last September on craigslist in less then a week. Made a nice profit & cost to sell was 0. It if is in good condition & priced right it will sell. No reason to give a cut to anyone else.
