Post subject:  Wanted: Carry-on Air Conditioning
Located in SE Michigan. Looking for Crusair carry-on (over the hatch) air conditioner. Any BTU ok but prefer 7000btu. Not a deal breaker.

Mind you these carry on units are insane on the amp draw. A 2000w inverter gen won't run it.

A 6000btu marine air is around $1200 also, and easily can be installed yourself. They can easily be run on a 2000w inverter gen.

If you Google it, you can find it cheaper.

This is something you use shore power or a genset on. Really nothing else, the surge it take and the power to keep it running is a lot!

The surge of a carry on like above is massive. You need a 3000w genset to power one. That's a $2000 gen with a $1200 carry on. $3200!!!

You can pick up a marine AC system for around $1500, 2000w gen for $900.. and for under $3000 installed you can have AC anywhere. The only reason to really have a carry on is to just keep the interior smelling nice. You can really just get a standard portable AC for $300 new and do the exact same.

SHORE POWER!! Than when you leave the slip, the AC goes in the dock box. The bigger boats would have gensets and factory installed AC. Generlly they run them on shore power, but the option is there. Most genset range in the 4KW to 10KW range.

Not to be hard on you, but "is to just keep the interior smelling nice" it will cool down the cabin & make it dryer. It least on the boats that I have been on. And to the $300 unit, I have never seen a marine AC unit that cheap. Unless you talking about one for a house. Which would never fit in my port.

So when is yours going in??

The carry on is great for the smaller boats. (21 to 26 feet or so) Or the boater that does not want to give up the space and could be selling it down the road.

Ive owned a carry-on before and loved it. Portable. Its not light so being able to remove it from the boat when you dont need it is nice. And when I was at the marina this past weekend (read: sweatbox), it was priceless. My neighbor was so nice to let me borrow theirs for the weekend for a trip we went on.

I keep my boat at my seawall so I dont use A/C any other time, unless we go on a trip with our boating club to a marina off somewhere and its going to be HOT.

Also, they regularly sell for $200-$400 around here on Craigslist. Why the heck would I pay WORST marine $1200 for one?!?! For something Ill use twice a season? No way.

Still looking for somebody selling one late season, thats all. Its not an immediate need and I dont want permanent A/C. I called on one on CL and somebody was coming to look at it. Theres another one, typical CL seller not returning calls or emails. Geesh.

And with that said, no sea strainer to deal with for the 2 or 3 times a year use.
