Post subject:  Moderating new users?

Hi all,

We've had a ton of spam lately. Clearly some scripting activity doing it.

How about we switch the forum to require an e-mail activation AND individual moderating of new user posts?

This way we'd get an e-mail address for them (trivial, I know) and make them take at least one step to get through.

Then we'd also have a way for a real person to see their first post(s) and approve them. Or delete it and ban them (and their IP address) if it's spam.

wouldn't it be easier to pull the snippet of code from the registration process for Kaptcha, and make it part of the login process? That would eliminate bot activity on the spot.

Not sure I'd want to be tormented with a captcha every time I had to log in.

Forced moderation of all new users isolates the effort to just that of the moderators, not everyone. As long as we've got active and cooperative moderators it usually works. I'd rather trivially promote a valid first time user to unmoderated based on seeing a 'real post'. As opposed to slogging through the dozen or more spam posts AND users I had to deal with the other day.

So there a DOZEN new spam accounts posted just last night alone. Mostly from China.

SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. It's time to bite the bullet and at least TRY using a mod or two to fend off this nonsense.

Any members seeing any spam, please click the "report post" on the bottom right. It saves us a ton of time reading every post.

I find it's sometimes faster to just pull up the membership list and look at whether a new user has posted anything. 99% of the time if it's a bogus looking username like xhgts2554 or something then it's a spammer.
