+1 on Lou's comments.

Perhaps spark plugs while you can do it without stancing on your head. Dan

You really did get that engine out fast. Nice work!

I spray everything (steel and aluminum and electrical) with Boeshield T-9 rust preventative...works great. Good time to spray the bottom half of the engine while it's out.

Things I wished I would have changed while the engine was out- blower motor and hoses, trim sender, shift cable(not to hard with engine in but something to think about). Make sure to align you engine and drive once your done (hopefully you didn't move your mounts or at-least measured them. Also when you reinstall the exhaust boots they only go on one way.

I told my wife I just saved us about 3k, but she is used to me doing everything so she expects it...lol. After I took the outdrive off motor was out in about 2 hrs. Exhaust boots were a pain but everything else was pretty easy. It helps having a beam you can back under and hoist off of. I just replaced bilge float while motor was in. Everything else looks good...might as well change the oil while its in the air. My plan is to strip the aluminum and pitting as best I can with wire wheel and any other tool I can round up, then wipe down with vinegar. I bought a can of zinc chromate primer, about 3 or 4 thin coats of it, then the volvo epoxy silver paint. I bought a tube of life caulk o seal the transom plywood edges and a new seal.....total cost......drum roll......55 dollars and a whole lot of time so far.

Regarding the wire wheel - you know not to use plain steel wire wheels on aluminum? I think it's because the bits that come loose get embedded and cause corrosion?

I knew about wheel but I wasn't about to break off a stud trying to get them out. This should buy me some time, next time ill replace the transom housing if I have issues from a donor. I'm going to have to hunt down one of those rust preventatives, where can I buy them. Don't have time to wait on amazon, lol. I used the plastic abrasive wheel everywhere I could get it and a sanding disc.

How many coats of primer and paint did you do?

3 coats of primer and 3 coats Volvo paint. Just bought the corrosionx hd. Stuff was 20 bucks a can. It's almost half my repair bill. Lol

Alright motor is in, outdrive on, changing bilge hose so waiting on it, replaced impeller, ready for tryout.....almost. I found a round housing in the back of motor that looks like an alarm maybe....it was broken into a few pieces and glued together. Going to try to get parts tomorrow and hopefully pick it up....is it an alarm? What does it monitor, it's on same bracket as wiring harness plug. Oh and that corrosion x stuff is nasty. I sprayed the motor and then got that stuff everywhere putting the motor in.....man wife has a lot of cleaning degreasing to do around the engine hatch.lol

Thanks
Rick

Yep it is nasty but that pan will NOT rust. Here in salt water we know what works. My trailer has nearly no rust on it and ones that are not sprayed with that or something similar, anything that is not galvanized like zinc plated ubolts and leaf springs will rust like crazy.
You sure you did not want to test it first by installing the drive alone with the engine out and then backing it in the water?

I'm pretty confident that I found the cause of the leak. I probably should have done that but motor wasn't high enough to come completely over sides of boat. Probably could have taken rear seat back off, but wasn't thinking about it really. Rookie boat mechanic..lol. Nothing like a crash course. Transom seal was flat and you could see where corrosion on drive was pushing it off the transom near the bolts.

Yes Rick you did a great job, nothing rookie about it and you should be proud. Coming from a guy who has spent many hrs in da bilge. If you ever need to split the upper n lower drive and it won't come apart I got a trick for that...

Thanks for the compliments guys. :o It really is just stubborness mixed with being a tight ass. Its a good thing I can sleep on the boat because she owes me quite a few hours of return playtime. I found the engine alarm ordered it and also a replacement serpentine to store onboard. I cant wait to get to work on it doing something fun.... I like the underwater lights. Do they attract the small fish at night? Kids are 6 and 8 and i think they would get a kick out of that. Next add on will be a second bilge pump.
