Case in point about the 4wd.

Tonight while pulling my boat out for some mods (see thread in electrical, coming soon) the guy at the ramp in front of me could not pull his (i'm guessing here, but it was smaller than my H180) 16 ft bowrider out using his pickup without putting it in 4wd. Sand all over the ramp, plus the end of the ramp being washed out from people power loading, creating a nice "hump" to pull over while going back up the ramp made it impossible otherwise.

A boat the size of your Chap, or a Vista..... fugedaboudit.... Would have never got it up the ramp without 4wd.

I understand rics point about 4WD. I grew up on a farm, and all our trucks (except one) were 2WD. Matter of fact, 4WD was kinda rare, cause it cost too much, so most everyone we knew had 2WD. And we did fine, you just have to know how to drive em, and of course know the limitations of em too.

By the way, I've used the "let the air out a bit" trick many times in my life, and it works. Don't know why everyone is busting on the guy for talking about a known tip (especially in the off roader world).

It is a relevant solution for off road instances in sand or mud, but has little effect on a slimey, wet, ramp. Also will not be very effective on a concrete ramp with light sand coverage. Not good for the tires either when pulling a heavy load.

You can get away with 21' & 2 wheel drive. Any bigger than that you need 4 wheel drive.

Well ya got me there, I never had to let air out of the tires on a wet/slimey boat ramp. Altho I have used that trick to get unstuck from several creek crossings that were covered with wet/slimey rocks, but I figure you'll tell me that ain't the same to prove your point, so I'll let it go with the ole agree to disagree thing.

Oh, you are right about the letting air out the tires is bad for them when pulling a heavy load. My bad for not mentioning you must put air BACK IN the tires when you get unstuck...

Well that brings in another issue. I can't afford a 4wd tundra or titan. Tundras go from 12k 2wd to 18k 4wd. Titans 9k 2wd to 16k 4wd.

I'll just have to make due. I don't even have a truck right now so something is better than nothing!

Before I purchased my 2007 Titan SE 4x4, I searched Truck Trader and I noticed that there were many used Tundras and Titans that were for sale with 200,000 to 300,000 miles on them and that is what sold me. My auto tech also confirmed that it was these two model trucks to look for due to dependability and cost to fix. I chose the Titan because it could seat six and it was less expensive than the Tundra. Given how cheap ric is, my bet is he goes with a Titan.

Edited: must have posted at the same time as ric.

Or I could always sell my boat, car, and get a 90s f150 and a 2005 248 vista without touching my bank account

Sounds like a good plan but you would have to give up your condo pond for good, and it looks like you have it pretty good there. Also I don't think a 90's F150 would properly pull a 248. The tow ratings back then were much lower than the F150's of today, and I would think you would want the 3 valve 5.4 as a minimum...which didn't come out till I think 2004.

Just out of curiosity is there a certain lake you want to travel to, or do you just want to explore what's out there in general?

A dodge 1500 pulling 10k, hahahah.. sure it will pull it but good luck with that.. the guy that bought my boat came with a dodge 1500 and the bumper almost hit the ground. 2008, sl262, 8500 pds. It's one thing to get going but how about stopping safely?
"imports" that are mostly made here are still "imports"... R&D on american trucks is done here. That's where a ton of money is spent. Money still comes back to america on domestic trucks, whether they are assembled or not in mexico.. Profits for imports are sent back to their country of origin...
I have a 2011 F250 Diesel that towed my SL 262 that was about 8500 pounds... F150 I had could do it, but not well. Also, good luck stopping quickly if the need arises...

I'm from Youngstown and had a true affinity for Chevy's as their is a plant in Lordstown, Oh and had a lot of family working there. I'm certainly not anti-domestic but the lines are so blurry now you can by many "imports" that are built with and return more domestic dollars than a "domestic" product.

Chrysler/Dodge is owned by Fiat, an Italian car company, does that make it an import?

Chevy interiors also look like the combination of 80's style mixed with a little bit of not giving a shit. I don't care if someone offered me a 2010 Silverado 4x4 with tow package for $5000 right now, I'd decline. It takes all my will to not want to take a hammer to the dash of one.
