I hope I don't have to. If I do, I'll get in touch. Shift cable being serviced this weekend. Thanks.

Apparently I didn't have the drive low enough to get the smooth shift that I wanted. The mechanic came to the house and really lowered the tongue to get a better angle on the drive on my sloped driveway. Turns out that the previous owner didn't tell the truth about servicing the out drive gear oil. None showed on the stick when the mechanic pulled it. Dumb mistake on my part. I was recommended to change the gear oil. I changed it out with the Volvo synthetic drive oil and the clicking sound that I didn't notice before but the mechanic did, went away. Now comes the next question. How smooth does the drive engage? It does have a clink when it engages but not like before I changed out the oil. Would anyone advice changing the clutch assembly on the top of the unit only because of its age?

Got the boat in the water this weekend and the drive felt a lot better when shifting. But, because of the age, I think I would still like to change out the clutch assembly. I think it thuds too much going into gear. Not smooth at all. Unless I'm wrong about this type of drive, still would like to change. Anyone out there to help on this?

How is your engine idle speed? I don't know Volvos but on the dog clutch drives the idle speed has to be as low as you can get it for it to shift smoothly. I have mine at 550-600 in gear in the water. When you shift one of these into Neutral the ESA lowers the idle to about 450 to let the clutch dogs release the fwd or rev gear. I know that the cone clutch does not need an Electronic Shift Assist as the Cobra and Alpha have but I bet the idle speed does affect shift quality.

when i had the problem with mine when in gear for forward and engine off I could take prop and turn it quite a bit before it would grab and lock into gear. almost like a poorly adjusted cable and it wasnt applying the needed throw, but the cable was new and adjusted properly. so when I remove the front shifter assembly under the front cover and inspected the clutch cone it was black and burnt, not a brass color anymore. so I manually moved the clutch cone up and down and noticed if I jammed it hard to the forward gear position it grabbed right away.
After I did some seaching for the part i found a parts bullitin for that part.
here it is:
http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/VP_Se ... cement.pdf
so I replaced the cone and shoe and no problems after.

Pm if you need help Alex and I will give you my Number

My idle is low, about 550. It really clunks when going in gear and now I noticed that it slips out and clunks back in again randomly when not moving the throttle.

Where exactly is the clutch cone and shoe located? Can I take the lower unit off only? If not, should I replace any gaskets if I have to pull the drive?

to inspect it you just have to remove the front plastic cover with the 3 3/8s bolts. then you can remove the linkage from the shifter then there is 4 more 3/8s bolts holding the shifter on. you have to be carefull because the shift shoe is slid into the shifter with a spring that will push it out.

now to remove the shift cone the drive has to be removed. then the top cover and gear must be removed as well as the pinion gear, (which is your input shaft with the u-joints)..
all of this is in the top end not bottem.
iyou can look up the exploded picture of all the parts from the Volvo site for your drive to get a better idea if it is something you want to tackle

All OK. The more I used the boat the better the shifting felt. I now believe that the boat was layed up for more than one season. New oil in drive made a big difference. Thanks for the help, all.

My Cobra SX's engage with a clunk. The same clunk my VP DP-SM did.

If the gear lube was run low and/or was in real bad shape when you drained it, I personally (Mr. Overkill) would run it 5 hours and drain/refill it again. How did the magnet on the drain plug look?
