Don't quote me ( or do quote me, it doesn't matter) but I think "Volvo" oil is mobile 1 synthetic.

There is a picture in one of the threads of the Volvo oil with the Amsoil logo on the bottle.

The Volvo straight 30W synthetic was not Mobil1. In any case they haven't made it for over a year now. Not sure if that was a Volvo or an Amzoil decision.

Many OEM's go to tender with oil companies who supply their OEM branded oils.
It's generally a mid level specification (you can buy much better!) that needs to be met & most often than not; the cheapest tender wins.
Contracts generally run for a few years & it goes to tender again.

Brilliant idea; that's what we need, marine drives lubricated by water ! Free, it wouldn't matter if they leaked and very immune to overheating due to waters thermal properties. Aren't they called shaft drives/ P brackets though ?

LOL - exactly.
Seriously though... I had an old Cobia with an OMC 800 stringer. Due to distractions from the wife at the time, I didn't realize that I had failed to refill the drive with lube at the end of the previous season until on the water the first time the next season. Of course, it seized up about 3 minutes into our first outing. Floating in the middle of the lake, I came to the realization of what had transpired. Scratching my head, and understanding that the innards were pretty much shot, I went ahead and opened the fill plug, filling the drive with lake water. I was then able to crank the engine and limp back to the dock at idle speed.
I'll say it again, even water lubricates better than nothing.

Just got back from my local Volvo Penta parts marina. According to the parts manager, VP now recommends 10w40 synthetic. Also, Merc, VP and Yamaha have all recommended to no longer fog your engine during winterization.

According to the parts manager, reason for no longer recommending fogging is the oil is destroying sensors.

Thought I'd pass along.

Could be that this is what VP is now recommending:

Possibly because it was Amsoil that was making their syn 30 so it seems from the pic that Mike posted.
Still I say if you don't want to go for the marine specific oils the best you can do is a gas/diesel rated 15w/40. Chevron, Texaco and Pennzoil all make them and you can get them in regular auto parts stores.
