I pulled the engine cover to replace the impeller and when I put it in the water last night there was a steady trickle of water dripping from the back of the motor. I had a recent overheat that is why I replaced the impeller. Any ideas on where the water would be coming from?

Did you have water leaking before?
Was it a bad overheat?
Go and check the small hose that goes from the transom mount to the P/S cooler behind the starboard (driver's side) exhaust manifold. If this leaks you can have a drip there, and overheating.
It could be other things too, loose transom assembly bolts (check Niagara's thread on this), driveshaft bellows, exhaust Y pipe seal or the pipe itself. This is one of the big problems with I/Os, there are just many places that they can leak water unlike outboards.

Check your exhaust from manifold to rubber to Y-Pipe connections. They are held together by large hose clamps, tighten those clamps. If that isn't it, re-check the hose fittings on the raw water pump, then check the power steering cooler, then the transom plate. What engine/drive you have?

I have the 5.0 liter Cobra SX. The dealer said the outdrive is basically a Volvo. The impeller I bought was a Volvo part. It is not leaking from the water pump. It was leaking while just sitting in the water without the engine running. I will check all of those connections. I will be putting it in the water again tonight.

Ok, we basically have the same drive/engine. If all the hoses check okay, then it may be the dreaded transom plate leaking. See my adventures in fixing this here

BTW, I am still waiting for a nice (no rain) day to finish that task up.

If it was the transom seal I wouldn't think it would be dripping down the back of the motor. I will check the hoses coming off the exhaust manifolds tonight. Those hoses should be over the rear of the motor so the location makes sense. Maybe the severe overheat I had caused the problem.

Ah, bit of a difference there. I had an overheat once and I had a trickle from the port side exhaust hose where it goes from metal to rubber. Tightened the hose clamps and it stopped.
